In 2017, Leonard created the surgical nurse navigator role for an advanced recovery program for surgical patients.

She identified an opportunity to create an efficient healing pathway by guiding patients from the pre-surgery phase to the outpatient home recovery phase. Leonard worked with ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital surgeons to implement pathways, order sets and safety assessments using evidenced-based practice guidelines.

Her vision for this level of care coordination along with her personal investment as a PACU (post-anesthesia care unit) nurse in guiding a patient's care, educating, assuring adequate resources and a safe home environment has reduced infections, promoted healing and saved lives.

“Patient safety is a top priority for our organization,” Darrin Arquette, president of ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital, said in the release. “We are proud to have one of our hospital’s own recognized for this health system-level award. Jan exemplifies our hospital’s strong commitment to patient safety through her work as a surgical nurse navigator. We are lucky to have her as part of our team, and we congratulate her on winning this award.”
