🌱 ProMedica, UTMC Cancel Surgeries + Fatal Fire In East Toledo

Good morning, people of Toledo! Brad King here with the latest issue of the Toledo Daily.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and not as cold. High: 41 Low: 29.

Here are the top five stories today in Toledo:

  1. One person is dead and others are injured after a 10 unit apartment complex went up in flames at the intersection of Starr Avenue and East Broadway Street in East Toledo Tuesday morning. One person was found inside the building with gunshot wounds, and another jumped from a second-story window. Both were transported to St. Vincent Medical Center for treatment, and two others were rescued by police and fire crews. (WTOL)

  2. Elective surgeries have been canceled at ProMedica and the University of Toledo Medical Center. Both announcements were made Monday as a result of the rising COVID hospitalizations in the area. Also as of Monday, Ohio has reported a total of 6,747 COVID-19 patients statewide, the most since the pandemic began. (WTOL)

  3. The Lucas County Juvenile Justice Center faces a predicament as a COVID wave sweeps through the facility, which is currently housing a high number of youths aged 13-15 on gun charges. Safety measures are being taken, such as wearing masks and instituting a 7-day medical quarantine for new detainees. (13abc Action News)

  4. The deadline for a $25 dog license in Lucas County is January 31. The cost will jump to $50 thereafter. However, there is a new incentive program that will allow license holders to get discounts at local businesses such as doggy daycares, groomers, restaurants, and entertainment. (13abc Action News)

  5. The Toledo Opera has postponed all performances of the opera "Blue" due to a spike in COVID cases and hospitalizations in Northwest Ohio. The new show dates are August 26 and 28, with a number of virtual and in-person events concerning this show in the meantime. "Blue" comes from Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori and NAACP Theatre Award-winning librettist Tazewell Thompson and is inspired by contemporary events and Black literature. (toledo.com)
