The site of the former Remke Markets in Oakley will get new life as a department store, according to the property owner's website.

Regency Centers, owner of the 397,471-square-foot Hyde Park Plaza, lists Wisconsin-based retailer Kohl's as occupying the former Remke space, which is comprised of over 41,000 square feet sitting on the opposite corner from the center's largest occupant, Kroger.

The website also lists Jo-Ann Fabric as a tenant in the 24,393-square-foot space attached to the new Kohl's store. The Hudson, Ohio-based fabric retail chain already operates a smaller location at Hyde Park Plaza.

Remke Markets closed its Oakley location late last year. The building is currently under construction.

A Regency Centers leasing agent for Hyde Park Plaza wasn't immediately available for comment Wednesday evening. Representatives for Kohl's and Jo-Ann Fabric have yet to respond to messages from The Enquirer seeking comment.

Remke Markets were acquired in 2017 by the Findlay-based Fresh Encounters, who also operate Needler's Fresh Market, Save A Lot and King Saver, among other brands.

Founded in Covington in 1897 as a meat market, Remke Markets was the last locally based supermarket chain other than Kroger. At the time of the 2017 acquisition, 10 stores were left in the Greater Cincinnati area.

The closure of the Oakley store left only five locations remaining in the region: Crescent Springs, Taylor Mill, Florence and Independence in Kentucky and one Ohio location, in Harrison.
