Proposed tennis complex fails to pass CMCSS school board

The Clarksville-Montgomery County School Board motion to approve a new tennis complex at Carmel Elementary failed in a 4-3 vote in the Oct. 18 formal meeting.

The proposed location was on currently undeveloped land, owned by the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System. To receive grants from the United States Tennis Association, the land would have to be transferred into the county's ownership.

"My concern ... is the location," said board member Charlie Patterson, District 6.

Others against the tennis complex were in agreement with Patterson, adding that, it should be located where the greatest need is, as well as in a more convenient spot for all students.

Those that supported the decision acknowledged the need for such a complex and referenced positive community response.

"There are a whole lot of tennis players that would utilize this space ...[CMCSS] has graduated a lot of tennis players ... and [they're] looking for courts," said Aron Maberry, District 7.

While there were a few suggestions for locations from the board, the ultimate vote was on whether they would allow the county to have the land for the complex .

With the denial from the board, county Parks and Recreation would next have to find a different location.
