Prosecutor claims video evidence connects pair to April 29 New Bedford homicide

NEW BEDFORD — Two men were held without bail Monday following their arraignment in New Bedford District Court in the April 29 homicide of 36-year-old Luis Miranda.

Prosecutors say there is video surveillance evidence connecting them to the murder.

Probable cause hearings were scheduled for June 10.

Jonathan Medina Perez, 41, was arrested early Monday morning at his home on Pleasant Street in Fall River. He is charged with murder and two counts of armed assault with intent to murder.

Jonathan Goncalves, 33, of New Bedford, was arrested Saturday at his family's home on Washington Street in New Bedford, and charged with accessory to murder-before the fact and accessory to murder-after the fact.

Assistant District Attorney Shawn Guilderson said there was video surveillance evidence connecting the pair to the murder. He said it shows a car rented by Perez at the scene, as well as at an attempted robbery in New Bedford an hour earlier.

The shooting took place at about 1:01 a.m. at the corner of County and Weld streets. Miranda was in a parked car with two other passengers.

Eleven shots were fired, according to the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system. Nine shell casings were found at the scene.

An hour earlier, video footage picked up an attempted robbery of the same vehicle rented by Perez at a different New Bedford corner.

Video evidence indicates the rental vehicle returned to a Somerset motel, where Perez had rented a room, and also depicted the same vehicle at the shooting scene an hour later. According to prosecutors, Goncalves was driving the vehicle and Perez was seated on the passenger’s side from where the shots were fired when they were at the scene. There are also witness accounts, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors say there’s video footage of the pair checking the vehicle out after returning to the motel in Somerset before going inside.

A search warrant was executed at Perez’ home Monday.
