Prosecutor identifies 46-year-old Kearny woman killed in Route 3 crash

Karen Garcia, a 46-year-old woman from Kearny, was identified as the fatal victim in a multi-car crash that snarled traffic along Route 3 Thursday morning and sent another driver to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

Garcia's vehicle struck an SUV as it sat disabled in one of the highway's westbound lanes at approximately 4:47 a.m. in Clifton near Rutherford Avenue, prosecutors said Monday. Soon after, Garcia's vehicle was broadsided by a 39-year-old driver from Union City.

Garcia was pronounced deceased at Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was taken by medical teams along with the Union City man, who survived his injuries.

The driver of the disabled SUV, a 53-year-old man from Staten Island, was unharmed in the collision, which remains under investigation, prosecutors said, and no charges had been filed against either of the surviving motorists.

Westbound lanes of the highway between Clifton and Rutherford remained closed throughout the morning, as traffic heading east slowed to a crawl alongside the crash site, authorities had said.
