Prospect barn fire claims 60 therapy animals despite efforts of firefighters and others

Animals that were trapped inside a barn during a fire in Prospect could not be saved, despite efforts by rescuers and bystanders, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to a working barn fire on Spring Road about 11:25 p.m. on Friday and found a barn engulfed in flames, according to Mike Guastaferri, chief of the Volunteer Fire Department of Prospect, Inc.

Bystanders and firefighters together tried to rescue the animals, but “the intense heat and flames from the wind driven fire prevented any rescue,” Guastaferri said in a statement on Saturday.

The fire was quickly extinguished with the help of the Cheshire Fire Department and the Bethany Fire Department while the Beacon Hose Company provided station coverage at Prospect Fire Headquarters, officials said.

The cause of the fire was not yet known. The blaze was being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
