Protect your plants - parts of RI might experience a late-season freeze tonight
Protect your plants it's — going to be unseasonably cold in Rhode Island tonight.
A dry air mass is pushing into New England, which is causing the National Weather Service Boston to forecast freezing temperatures in parts of the region. Parts of the Ocean State away from the coastline, including the interior and parts of Washington County, may experience a freeze tonight, according to NWS meteorologist Kevin Cadima.

The freeze, which is as cold as a frost but doesn't include frozen dew, can be harmful to tender plants. Gardeners may want to bring sensitive plants inside or cover them for warmth.
This is "definitely" late in the season a cold snap, Cadima said.
The average date for a last frost in Rhode Island is April 26.

In Providence, the forecast is above freezing at 35 degrees. The latest occurrence of 35 degrees temperatures in the city goes back to May 27 in 1972, according to NWS data. The latest 32-degree temperatures recorded by NWS in the capital was May 12, 1907.
