The anticipation for the sequel to 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was already high, but now we’ve got a new reason to look forward to Miles Morales’s next adventure.

The trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released this week, giving us a look into what Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) is up against in his upcoming quest to save every universe without losing anyone close to him.

Sharp-eyed fans analyzing every frame noticed a piece of decor in the background of one frame. When Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) looks at a picture of her and Miles, there’s a sign on the bedroom wall that reads “Protect Trans Kids.”

“I can’t lose one more friend,” she says in dialogue laid over the scene, though it’s unclear whether any of these individual aspects relate directly to one another.

There hasn’t been any rumblings of a trans character appearing in the movie, but in 2019, Zach Barack became the first openly trans actor to appear in a Marvel film — the live-action Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The animated Spider-Verse films are a joint effort between Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures, with Marvel Entertainment, but it still seems it would be fitting for the inclusivity to continue with Spider-Man, especially considering the obnoxious list of rules for Spider-Man that came to light during the Sony hack and once drummed up some drama.

But even a nod to the struggles currently facing trans kids and teens is appreciated, even if we have to wait awhile longer to see if the sign plays into the story in any larger way.
