Protesters Chant Outside Alabama State House After Abortion Bill Vote

Protesters gathered outside the State House in Montgomery, Alabama, on Tuesday, May 14, after the state’s Senate passed a bill that would criminalize abortion “in nearly all cases,” the Montgomery Advertiser reported.

The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 25 to 6 and was sent to the governor for signature. The proposed law was anticipated to be litigated in the courts.

Dozens of activists gathered outside the State House in the wake of the vote to register their dissent. A number of protesters wore costumes from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaids Tale while others carried signs and slogans in the plaza in front of the building. Credit: Mallory Hagan via Storyful
