Protesters occupy city hall lawn as demonstrations over Alvin Cole's death continue in Wisconsin

Additional arrests were made Saturday in Wisconsin as protests continued following last week’s announcement that a police officer who fatally shot a Black teenager in February won’t be charged.

Saturday night’s demonstration in Wauwatosa regarding the death of 17-year-old Alvin Cole saw protesters block street lanes and occupy the lawn outside the city hall building, police said.

Authorities called the protest an “unlawful assembly” at 7:40 p.m. local time, as a curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. had been put into place.

“A few individuals who refused to leave were given additional warnings, then were arrested without incident,” reads a tweet by the Wauwatosa Police Department. “We appreciate the cooperation of those who dispersed once announcements were made.”

Police did not say how many arrests were made Saturday, which marked the fourth consecutive day of protests in Wauwatosa.

The demonstrations began after the Milwaukee County District Attorney announced last Wednesday that Wauwatosa officer Joseph Mensah will not be charged in the death of Cole.

Cole was shot on Feb. 2 in a parking lot at Mayfair Mall, where officers had responded to a report of a disturbance.

The district attorney said Cole was in possession of a stolen pistol and refused to surrender it to police before he was shot by Mensah, who is also Black.

Cole’s mother and three sisters were among 24 protesters arrested Thursday, a lawyer for the family said.

Police said 28 people were arrested Friday.

Before Saturday, police said demonstrations earlier in the week had seen people throw rocks, bottles and bricks at officers and loot from stores.
