The Providence College Friars learned their fate on Selection Sunday, shortly after 6:30 p.m. The Friars finished the 2022-23 season at 21-11 overall, 13-7 in the Big East. Providence lost its first game in the conference tournament, 73-66, to Connecticut on Thursday afternoon. Coach Ed Cooley's team gathered on the Providence campus awaiting details of its next game.

Bryce Hopkins will face his old team

Bryce Hopkins played his freshman season (2021-22) at Kentucky before entering the transfer portal and landing in Providence. A 6-foot-6 forward from Oak Park, Illinois, Hopkins appeared in 28 games for the Wildcats, averaging 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game in 6.5 minutes per outing.

In Providence this season, Hopkins appeared in 32 games, averaging 16.1 points per game. Hopkins was named first team All-Big East last week, becoming the first Friar to earn All-Conference First Team honors since Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil did it in 2016.
