Providence police investigate homicide after woman's body found in river

PROVIDENCE − Police are investigating a homicide after a woman's body was found in the Woonasquatucket River on Thursday afternoon, according to Detective Maj. David Lapatin.

The woman's identity hasn't been released, and no arrests have been reported.

At about 1 p.m. Thursday, the police went to an area across from 297 Promenade St., where they saw what appeared to be a human body in the water, the police said Friday morning.

Members of the police and fire departments recovered the body and took it to the state Medical Examiner's Office, which had also responded to the scene, the police said.

The police said "further information will be forthcoming pending the ongoing investigation."
