New Provider At San Mateo Co. Event Center's COVID-19 Test Site

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Event Center dropped its contract with Virus Geeks after long delays in receiving COVID-19 test results and will have a new provider beginning in February, the county announced Friday.

Virus Geeks, which drew complaints from residents after ABC7 News reported that thousands of people waited nearly two weeks to get their results back, will no longer operate the county’s testing site at the event center.

Instead, San Francisco-based Carbon Health will be able to accommodate up to 2,000 COVID-19 tests per day at the walk-up testing site. Anticipated turnaround times for test results will be 48 hours, according to Carbon Health’s chief growth officer Nita Sommers.

“We have an established relationship with Carbon Health,” County Manager Mike Callagy said. “They helped us open a mass vaccination site at San Francisco International Airport and at other clinics across the county and we are looking forward to continuing this partnership. We know testing is critical to stem the spread of COVID-19 and taking care of one’s own health.”

The site will be in the same location, and operate Tuesdays through Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
