PS5 stock UK - live: Game and Amazon restocks could drop soon – what to know

Who could restock the elusive console today? (The Independent)

UPDATE: The PS5 has sold out at Argos. It could drop at Game and Amazon next week. Read on for more information.

It has now been over a year since Sony’s latest console, the PlayStation 5 (PS5), first arrived in the UK. But supply problems and a worldwide semiconductor shortage sparked by the coronavirus pandemic have caused the production of the device to slow to a crawl. New stock is still tricky to find and, when it does appear, the PS5 sells out quickly, both online and in-store.

It’s your last chance to bag a console before Christmas, and it looks like retailers are pulling out all the stops to ensure one is sat underneath the tree this year. So far this month, we’ve seen restocks at Smyths Toys, Currys, PlayStation Direct and ShopTo. This week, we’ve seen BT, Very, Littlewoods, Currys, Studio, ShopTo and EE restock the console.

If you’re still on the lookout for a PS5, you’ve come to the right place. Our liveblog is on hand to give you the latest insight on restocks from all major UK retailers, both online and in-store, as well as providing details on rumoured releases, plus the latest PS5 games and accessories to snap up.

A recap of this week’s PS5 restock events

16:45 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

Whew, what a week it’s been! There have been a monstrous 13 drops this week – one of the largest weeks for restocks since the summer. Here’s a recap of how things played out.

On Monday, we saw PlayStation Direct and BT restock the console – a fairly good day for a Monday. But then on Tuesday, Very, ShopTo, Currys (with an actual general sale restock), Studio and Littlewoods all joined in on the action, with another restock from BT to top it all off.

On Wednesday, Very dropped for a second time and BT seemingly passed the rest of the stock on to sister company EE, who also had a restock. Thursday saw another drop from PlayStation Direct and a short, sharp drop from Hamleys. And today? Well, we hope lots of you have managed to secure a console from Argos.

Don’t fret if not though. You should have one last chance to bag a console before Christmas next week, with Game and Amazon both set to drop stock. Join us back here on Monday, and have a fab weekend.

PS5 stock tracking begins

Monday 6 December 2021 08:29 , Alex Lee

Gooooood morning PS5 hunters and welcome to another week of PS5 stock tracking action! Our mission? Help you bag a console before Christmas.

Yesterday, ShopTo had one of its traditional Sunday restocks, with stock hanging around for quite a while. Today, the PS5 is set to drop at PlayStation Direct, after those who have been exclusively invited to buy a console from the store have bought theirs. Follow along with our stock updates and we’ll tell you how to bag one.

Sony is reportedly developing an Xbox Game Pass competitor

Monday 6 December 2021 08:59 , Alex Lee

In other news this morning, a Bloombergreport suggests that Sony is gearing up to launch its own version of Xbox’s Game Pass, codenamed Spartacus.

According to the report, Sony will merge PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now – the cloud gaming service – but keep the PS Plus branding, and the most expensive tier would give gamers access to PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games. It’s something to look forward to for sure, especially for fans of those retro Tomb Raider games.

Should you buy a PS5 from CeX?

Ah CeX, the butt of playground jokes and childhood second-hand game nostalgia. While we think fondly of CeX, we’d think twice about buying a PS5 from the retailer.

You might make a small profit selling your PS5 to CeX – who buys it for £475, but you’ll certainly lose a lot of money if you actually want to purchase the console.

CeX is currently selling the PS5 for £695 – that’s more than some of the most expensive bundles at Game. Our suggestion? Stick to the major retailers and get a new PS5 with a bundle for the same price.

Best PS5 accessory bundles

When the PlayStation Direct store opens up for orders, you’ll be able to have your pick from a bunch of different bundle options with various different PS5 accessories.

These include everything from extra controllers to media remotes to pulse 3D wireless headsets. Best part? They all appear on our round-up of the best PS5 accessories, which you can read below.

BT PS5 stock is also set to go live this morning

Monday 6 December 2021 09:39 , Alex Lee

(The Independent)

BT is also set to drop stock of the PS5 this morning, with BT Broadband customers getting priority access to buy the console.

You will need an access code, but if you have a BT TV or BT Sports subscription, you should be able to get one via this link. If you managed to secure an access code from a previous drop, then this should also work. We’ll let you know once stock goes live.

The PS5 is in stock at PS Direct

Monday 6 December 2021 10:07 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is now in stock at PlayStation Direct. There is a waiting room at the moment, so you’ve still got time to get in there before the buying gets started.

Luckily, it’s not first come first serve like a lot of other retailers. You get given a random unique ID once the countdown ends, meaning you don’t know what position in the queue you’ll be in when the consoles drop. Take that, scalpers!

Make sure to have your PSN credentials at hand or you won’t be able to buy the console.

PS Direct PS5 queue is now live

Monday 6 December 2021 10:34 , Alex Lee

The PlayStation Direct queue is now live. What’s everyone’s estimated wait time? Ours is more than an hour... We hope that some of you got a better queue position than us.

Good luck, and remember to have your PSN credentials and card details at hand so that you can quickly buy the console when you get through the queue.

There are no digital edition consoles available this time round, so you’ll need to cough up extra for the disc edition.

The PS5 has sold out at PlayStation Direct

Monday 6 December 2021 10:58 , Alex Lee

Whew, that went quick. The PS5 has now sold out at PlayStation Direct, but it is still in stock at BT if you have an access code.

As a reminder, you can only get an access code if you are a BT Broadband customer, so maybe ask a pal if they can lend you their code through the BT portal.

Currys VIP PS5

Monday 6 December 2021 14:15 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

Currys sent out a batch of VIP codes on 1 December, and rumours suggest that this is the last batch of codes the retailer will ever send out.

If you’re unfamiliar with the VIP pass code system, the retailer essentially ran a draw between March and June, offering people the chance to enter a raffle and buy a console, but it has been closed to new entrants for months now.

We predict that the retailer will make the console available again for general sale in the new year, doing away with the raffle system completely.

Argos PS5 stock rumoured to drop this week

Monday 6 December 2021 14:45 , Alex Lee

It seems like Argos is going to restock one last time before Christmas according to the ever reliable @PS5StockAlertUK. Argos hubs across the UK are currently receiving both disc and digital edition shipments this week.

That means a restock could take place on 10 December. This may be the easiest retailer to secure a console from this week, and most likely the last Argos restock before 25 December.

Best PS5 games

Monday 6 December 2021 15:05 , Alex Lee

The PS5 has amassed a healthy collection of must-play exclusives over its year-long lifespan. Managed to bag a PS5 this morning? You’ll want to pick some of the best PS5 games below up.

In the bestselling Spider-Man: Miles Morales (£44.99, Currys.co.uk), Peter Parker is replaced with his awkward teenage protégé, Miles Morales. A next-generation spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales refines the original’s formula,” our reviewer said. “This is a streamlined adventure with a more focused story, far less busy work and an endearingly clumsy protagonist still getting to grips with his powers.”

Meanwhile, Demon’s Souls (£57.99, Currys.co.uk) on PS5 is a showcase of what the new console is capable of. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game,” our tester said.

Give yourself some edge while playing with a gaming headset like this Razer blackshark V2 pro (£177.97, LaptopsDirect.co.uk), which earned the top spot in our edit of the best wireless headsets..

“Thanks to Razer’s offering, you don’t have to spend £300+ on a wireless gaming headset to get excellent in-game sound,” our tester said. “Aimed at esports players, the headset offers superb directional audio and a superbly clear microphone ensuring your team communication is completely unimpeded.”

Monday 6 December 2021 16:50 , Alex Lee

All right folks, we’re closing up shop here on the blog for the evening and will be back online tomorrow morning to help even more of you cop a console.

But to any BT Broadband customers joining us at this late hour, there is (miraculously) still stock of the PS5 at the retailer! If you have any friends who use the company’s broadband, now is the perfect time to bug them.

If not, we’ll see you all tomorrow for some more console hunting. G’night!

Who could restock the PS5 today before Christmas?

Tuesday 7 December 2021 08:20 , Alex Lee

Goooooood morning PS5 hunters and welcome to another day of PS5 stock tracking action! We’re sad to say that the PS5 has now sold out at BT after more than 12 hours.

There’s a chance that the console could restock at EE now that BT’s allocation of consoles have dissipated – so watch out for a drop if you’re an EE pay monthly customer.

If not, then we’ve also got our eye on AO, Very and Amazon this morning. More on that to come. Stay tuned, and let’s get you a PS5.

The PS5 is now in stock at Currys

SOUND THE ALARM! Currys has just gone live with the PS5 for the first time in over six months. A huge number of bundles are available to buy. Get in quick as these are going to get snapped up fast!

It seems like the digital edition is the only one in stock – a rarity for those seeking the cheaper version of the console.

As usual, you’ll need an access code to buy the console. If you’re a BT Broadband customer, this can be retrieved via this link. How to get Very PlayStation 5 consoles

Tuesday 7 December 2021 09:50 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

If you’re stuck in Very’s waiting room, we’d recommend using the retailer’s app. Very physically can’t use the queuing system on the app, so you can go straight through and buy the console without any issue.

You will need your card details at hand if you don’t already have an account set up with Very.

Tuesday 7 December 2021 10:05 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is in stock at Littlewoods

Tuesday 7 December 2021 10:18 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is also in stock at Littlewoods, but as usual, the retailer has heavily inflated prices. Stock will last quite a while, but we’d recommend purchasing a console from one of the other retailers in the post below.

Littlewoods is selling the disc edition for £589.99 – that’s well over the recommended retail price, but we’ll let you make the decision on whether to buy it from the retailer.

The PS5 is still in stock at Very, Littlewoods and BT, after selling out at Studio

Tuesday 7 December 2021 11:20 , Alex Lee

Whew, that was a really lengthy restock from Studio, with the drop lasting well over two hours. A lot of our readers have secured a console from Studio in the past, so we hope lots of you bagged one this time round, too.

Didn’t cop one from Studio? It’s still in stock at Very, Littlewoods and BT – you’ll need to be a BT Broadband customer to get an access code and Littlewoods has over-inflated its prices, so Very is your best bet.

After two hours, the PS5 has now sold out at Very. You can still buy the console from sister company Littlewoods, but you’ll be paying a marked-up price.

Littlewoods sells the standalone disc edition console for £589.99, when most other retailers – including Very – sells it for £499.99. The PS5 is also still in stock at BT, but you’ll need an access code, which you can get by being a BT Broadband customer.

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?

Tuesday 7 December 2021 13:40 , Alex Lee

You sure can! All the PS4 games you’ve been stacking up over the years will play on your disc edition PS5 just fine, but if you’ve got a PS5 digital edition console, you’ll only be able to play PS4 games bought from the PlayStation Store.

Why? Well, that’s the tradeoff with buying a digital edition console. There’s physically no disc slot for you to put any of your PS4 games into.

The Scuf PS5 controller launches today

Tuesday 7 December 2021 15:10 , Alex Lee

This is almost as exciting as a PS5 drop – almost. The Scuf PS5 controller is finally coming out, and there will be three different models. There’s the Scuf reflex, Scuf reflex pro and the Scuf reflex FPS.

Each of the controllers will feature removable back control paddles, which can be configured on the go, and they all work with Sony’s dualsense technology – so you’ll still feel the game in your hands. The controllers are set to go on sale later today, so make sure you’re signed up to receive alerts.

PS5 VR headset details

Tuesday 7 December 2021 16:00 , Alex Lee

We sadly didn’t get a sneak peek at the PS5 VR during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase in September, nor at PlayStation State of Play in October, but that was to be expected.

It did get shown off at a secret developers summit in August, however, so at least we know it’s an actual real thing that exists in the world.

During the event, Sony revealed new controllers that will allegedly be able to tell where a user’s hands are, and how far away they are placed from the buttons. It also detailed the way it would release games for the next-gen headset.

Signing off!

Tuesday 7 December 2021 16:58 , Alex Lee

Whew, what a day! We’ve had five drops alone this rainy Tuesday, bringing our total for the week to a massive seven, and we’ve still got three more days of PS5 stock tracking to go this week!

If you’re still searching for the console, then the PS5 is still in stock at BT and Littlewoods at the time of writing. We’re not surprised, to be honest. Prices at Littlewoods are heavily inflated, while consoles at BT are reserved for those with an access code, which can only be obtained by BT Broadband customers.

We’ll be back tomorrow, where we’ll be looking intently at Amazon and AO. Join us then! G’night!

Good morning, PS5 hunters

Wednesday 8 December 2021 08:12 , Alistair Charlton

What a day we had yesterday! We saw no fewer than five drops during the day, with another coming later in the evening. Don’t worry if you missed out, as we’re expecting to see more PS5 restocks today and again towards the end of the week. As ever, stay tuned to this live blog for all of the latest PS5 stock news as soon as we have it.

Where will have PS5 stock next?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 08:16 , Alistair Charlton

It looks like the good news is set to continue, with claims of a restock landing at Amazon this morning. This could land any minute now, with the PS5 Stock Alerts Twitter account saying the consoles are expected between 8am and 9am today. An Amazon Prime membership will be required to purchase a console.

When did Amazon last have a PS5 restock?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 08:33 , Alistair Charlton

We could be seeing a PS5 restock at Amazon today, so we thought it’d be a good time to look back at the retailer’s history when it comes to PS5 consoles. We last saw PS5 stock at Amazon UK on 17 November. There have been a couple of restocks at some of Amazon’s European websites since then, but for UK shoppers it’s been a good few weeks now.

Before that, PS5 stock was available from Amazon UK on 27 October, 22 and 29 September, and 11 August. It’s a somewhat sporadic restock history, so it’s hard to say with any certainty if the consoles will land today, as rumoured, or not. We’re keeping our fingers crossed...

What’s the difference between the two models of PS5?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 09:40 , Alistair Charlton

 (Sony)
(Sony)

Sony sells two versions of the PS5. These are known as the disc edition and the digital edition. They have the same performance, design and technical specifications, but the digital edition does not have a disc drive. This means games can only be played by downloading them, and obviously there’s no way to play DVDs or Blu-ray movies.

The digital edition is also cheaper, at £359.99 compared to £449.99 for the disc edition.

When did Game last have a PS5 restock?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 10:02 , Alistair Charlton

We’ve seen loads of PS5 restocks this week, but one key retailer missing from the party is Game. We last saw PS5 consoles in stock at Game on 30 November, when the retailer had a morning and an afternoon restock. Before that, we also saw dual restocks on 4 and 17 November.

Both models of PS5 are out of stock at Game for now, but we hope to see restocks again soon.

Will Smyths have a PS5 restock this month?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 10:27 , Alistair Charlton

Christmas isn’t far away now, and shoppers will surely be starting to ask – will there be any more PS5 restocks before the big day? We’re hoping to see a restock from Smyths this month, but the website currently states vaguely how more consoles are expected “TBC 2021”.

Smyths also has no in-store stock at the moment either, with every one of its UK shops listing the PS5 as unavailable.

Can you buy a PS5 on the high street?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 10:53 , Alistair Charlton

Yes, but stock levels are as low in stores as they are online. That said, we think your best bet is to try local branches of Game and Smyths. The former receives handfuls of consoles every so often, sometimes with two or three shops offering PS5 stock on any one day. But these deliveries are very sporadic.

We recommend keeping an eye on this Twitter list, which shows tweets from all of Game’s UK stores. When consoles arrive, store staff announce availability on Twitter, but it’s usually a case of first-come, first-served so you’ll need to be quick.

As for Smyths, the toy retailer has a tool on its website for checking console availability at each of its UK stores. There aren’t any at the moment, but we’ve seen consoles appear, usually around five at a time, at several stores in recent weeks.

Can you buy a PS5 directly from Sony?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 11:30 , Alistair Charlton

Yes, but – guess what? – the shiny new PlayStation Direct online store is currently out of stock. PS Direct launched in the UK in November and had a fair few console restocks that month, on 15, 19, 22, 23 and 25 November, but there hasn’t been any console available yet for December.

We expect this to change before Christmas, but there’s no indication yet as to when those consoles might arrive.

EE is now out of stock

Wednesday 8 December 2021 11:35 , Alistair Charlton

EE’s PS5 restock has now sold out. The phone network made a bunch of console bundles available this morning, where pay monthly customers could add a PS5 to their contract and pay for it, interest free, over 12 months.

EE only had one PS5 restock in November and one in October too, so is seems fairly unlikely that more consoles will be offered to customers before January.

The best 4K TV for your new PS5

Wednesday 8 December 2021 12:05 , Alistair Charlton

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

While we wait for the next PS5 restock, it’s time to think about upgrading your television. The PS5 outputs video at 4K resolution and can even handle games running at 120 frames per second. That’s something not all TVs can manage, so if you want to see your new console running at its best, a new TV could be worthwhile.

We’ve rounded up nine of the best 4K TVs available right now, from manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic, among others. And the great news is you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a great 4K television – prices of our favourites start at under £400.

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 13:05 , Alistair Charlton

You sure can! The overwhelming majority of the PS4 games you own are playable on the PS5. You’ll be able to download any games you bought through the PlayStation store on your PS4 and play them on the next-gen console.

If you’ve got the disc edition of the PS5, you’ll also be able to insert your PS4 discs into it and play them that way, too. Obviously, because there’s no physical disc slot on the digital edition of the console, you won’t be able to play any PS4 discs you own. We’ve compiled together a list of our favourite PS4 games, and most of them have dropped in price since the PS5 came out.

Game PS5 restock tipped for this week

Wednesday 8 December 2021 13:26 , Alistair Charlton

Game is having a PS5 restock this week, according to the often-accurate PS5 Stock UK Twitter account, which says the consoles will be available on either 9 or 10 December. It is said the consoles will be available to order between 9am and 11:30am, then be dispatched on 17 December.

Very PS5 restock is here

Wednesday 8 December 2021 13:39 , Alistair Charlton

Very is the latest retailer to have a PS5 restock. The retailer has both the PS5 disc edition and PS5 digital edition available right now, and a virtual waiting room is currently in place on the website. Best of luck to everyone waiting in the queue!

How big is the PS5?

Wednesday 8 December 2021 14:01 , Alistair Charlton

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

Not as strange a question as you might think, because the PS5 is massive. It’s often an easy joke to say how big the next generation of game consoles are, ever since the chunky original Xbox arrived, followed by the even bigger PS4.

But, while the Xbox series X is also rather large, it’s the PS5 that is least likely to fit under your television. The digital edition is slightly slimmer, due to not having a disc drive, but both consoles are equally tall when stood on end.

They are 390mm tall and 260mm deep, while the disc edition is 104mm thick and the digital edition is 92mm. Both consoles are intended to be stood upright, but also come with a plastic stand to help them rest on their side – likely the only way most buyers will fit the console under their TV.

The console features an OLED display for the first time, which is larger than before and produces punchier colours and deeper blacks. There’s also a redesigned kickstand and double the internal storage of its predecessor.

Our reviewer said of the £309.99 console: “The larger display is fantastic and playing games in handheld mode is an absolute joy. The kickstand feels so solid and makes us never want to look at that little toggle on the back of the original Switch ever again...this is absolutely the best version of the console yet.”

Although it couldn’t quite match the excitement of yesterday, today still treated us to PS5 restocks at Very and EE. Plus, we’re expecting to see further restocks at Game – and potentially Argos and Amazon too – before the end of the week.

We’re signing off now for the evening, but will be here again tomorrow morning to bring you all of the latest PS5 restocking news.

Who could restock the PS5 today?

Thursday 9 December 2021 08:18 , Alex Lee

Goooooood morning PS5 hunters and welcome to another day of console stock tracking! It’s been a monster week of restocks for us here on the blog, with retailers seemingly pulling out all the stops to help secure you a console before Christmas.

Yesterday, EE finally restocked the console, and Very dropped for a second time this week, adding to the five restocks on Tuesday. As for today? Well, we’ve got our eye on Game and AO. Stick with us! We’ll bring you the latest.

PlayStation Direct PS5 stock is set to drop today

Thursday 9 December 2021 08:48 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is set to drop at PlayStation Direct this morning at 10am. Some lucky PSN users have already gained early access, and are checking out with their card in advance of the general drop right about now, but how do they get an invitation from PlayStation Direct?

Well, apparently it’s random. There’s no way to ensure that you get an invitation besides making sure your email notifications are turned on in your PSN settings.

We have seen reports of people being invited to buy the console even though they’ve already got a PS5, but we assume it’s related to activity on the PlayStation Network – playing games on the PS4 or similar.

Once those invited to buy the console this morning have finished purchasing their PS5 , PlayStation Direct will open sales up to the general public.

PS5 Amazon UK

(The Independent)

Here’s some PS5 stock tracker knowledge for you all. Amazon has a very strict restock pattern for its drops – it pretty much only ever restocks on a Wednesday. We didn’t get a drop yesterday, which means that it’s very likely that the retailer is going to have a restock on 15 December, just in time for Christmas.

You’ll need to be an Amazon Prime subscriber to buy the console. If you aren’t already signed up, you can get a 30-day free trial and then just cancel after you cop your PlayStation.

How does the PlayStation Direct PS5 drop work?

Thursday 9 December 2021 09:18 , Alex Lee

Shortly before the PS5 goes live at PlayStation Direct, a waiting room will open up. Unlike with other retailers, the first person to click the product link and enter the waiting room won’t get first dibs on a PS5.

After the timer finishes ticking down in the waiting room, you’ll be given a random position in the actual queue to buy the console, so scalping bots won’t have the upper-hand here.

Best PS5 games: ‘Demon’s Souls’ PS5

Thursday 9 December 2021 09:33 , Alex Lee

Looking for some PS5 games to go with your new console (which we’re sure you’re going to secure in the next few hours)? We recommend Demon’s Souls (£59.99, Currys.co.uk), which was named best action RPG in our round-up of the best PS5 games.

A complete remake of From Software’s infamously punishing action RPG, Demon’s Souls on PS5 is a showcase of what the new console is capable of. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game,” our writer said in their review.

The PS5 is now in stock at PlayStation Direct

Thursday 9 December 2021 10:04 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is now in stock at PlayStation Direct. There is a waiting room at the moment, so you’ve still got time to get in there before the buying gets started.

Luckily, it’s not first come first serve like a lot of other retailers. You get given a random unique ID once the countdown ends, meaning you don’t know what position in the queue you’ll be in when the consoles drop. Take that, scalpers!

Make sure to have your PSN credentials at hand or you won’t be able to buy the console.

The PS Direct queue is now open!

Thursday 9 December 2021 10:30 , Alex Lee

The waiting room has closed and the queue is open! What is everyone’s queue position ? We’ve got a 37-minute wait according to the queue estimator.

Remember though, it’s not always reliable. The time estimation tends to fluctuate wildly. Hold on tight, grab your PSN credentials and good luck! Let us know if you manage to bag one from the retailer.

The PS5 has sold out at PS Direct

Thursday 9 December 2021 11:00 , Alex Lee

Whew, another quick restock from PlayStation Direct. All consoles have sold out for the day. Well done to anyone who managed to secure one. If you didn’t, fret not! More restocks are expected to arrive this week.

Keep an eye on the blog for more updates. We’ll be offering up some more restock predictions throughout the day.

When was the last EE PS5 restock?

Thursday 9 December 2021 11:35 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

Yesterday! There were three bundles available at EE yesterday, but they sold out surprisingly quickly – drops at the retailer tend to last quite a while, but not this time.

To get the console, you needed to be an EE pay monthly customer and it was only available via EE’s Add to Plan service, which you pay over 11 months interest-free. You also had to pay £10 upfront. Could there be another EE restock this December? We’re doubtful, but always hopeful.

Could AO PS5 stock drop this week?

Thursday 9 December 2021 12:25 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

We don’t know for sure, but AO is certainly a retailer we have our eyes on for an imminent restock. The electronics retailer last had PS5 consoles in stock on 9 November, and before that we saw restocks on 1, 4, 16 and 19 October.

We’re hoping for at least one restock from AO before Christmas. Frustratingly, AO restocks aren’t the simplest. The past five drops at AO have all required you to perform the ridiculous Google Chrome inspect element trick to get it into your basket. For those unaware of the trick, we’ve got some instructions below. Note: Lazy people, stay away.

How to buy a PS5 from AO

When the PS5 is live, you have to copy the PlayStation product code on the AO website using Google Chrome.

Once you’ve done that, you need to go to a random product page on AO, such as this smart speaker. Right click on the green “add to basket” button and select “inspect element”, then in the window that pops up on the side of your screen, you have to replace the speaker’s product code with the PS5 product code you’ve just copied. It’s the series of numbers and letters that immediately follow “data-productcode=”.

We told you it was complex. We call these half-restocks, because sometimes AO does let you buy the console normally.

Will there be another Studio PS5 drop in December?

Thursday 9 December 2021 13:15 , Alex Lee

Studio had an unexpected restock on Tuesday morning. The retailer had both a standalone disc edition console in stock, as well as a Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart bundle with an extra dualsense controller for £569.99 (Studio.co.uk).

We don’t think Studio will have another restock before Christmas, so well done to anyone who managed to secure a console from the retailer earlier this week.

Could Argos PS5 stock drop tomorrow?

Thursday 9 December 2021 14:05 , Alex Lee

Earlier this week, the ever-reliable @PS5StockAlertUK console tracker, who has moles in the Argos warehouses, informed us that consoles were being delivered into local hubs this week, with a potential restock landing tomorrow.

If we don’t hear anything more from the stock tracker, it’s likely that the restock will take place next week, rather than tomorrow. Our recommendation as always is to get to a local Argos before it opens and queue up to order it in advance.

Best PS5 accessories: PS5 controller charger

Thursday 9 December 2021 14:55 , Alex Lee

Bundles at PlayStation Direct contained official Sony PS5 accessories. If you bought the one with the charging station or the pulse 3D wireless headset, these both appear in our round-up of the best PS5 accessories.

 (Sony)
(Sony)

“The Sony PlayStation 5 dualsense charging station isn’t the most exciting of accessories to own, but if you regularly need to recharge your controllers and you’re keen on a neat looking living space, you won’t regret investing in one,| our writer said in their review of the charging station. “While there are unofficial solutions out there, it’s this official docking station that looks the best. Simply slot one or two controllers in and the charging station soon recharges them up to full while keeping them out of your way and looking good under your TV.”

The Scuf PS5 controller sold out within three hours

Thursday 9 December 2021 15:45 , Alex Lee

If you didn’t hear the news, here’s a reminder – the Scuf PS5 controllers have finally been released! And guess what? They sold out within three hours. More drops of the controllers (yes, we can’t believe we’re typing that either) are expected in the coming weeks.

Each of the controllers feature removable back control paddles, which can be configured on the go, and they all work with Sony’s dualsense technology – so you’ll still feel the game in your hands. The controllers are set to go on sale later today, so make sure you’re signed up to receive alerts.

A recap of today’s PS5 restock events

Thursday 9 December 2021 16:54 , Alex Lee

Another day, another restock! This week has been chock full of them. We hope some of you managed to bag a PS5 from PlayStation Direct this morning. If not, we’ll be back here again tomorrow to do some more PS5 stock tracking.

We could see Argos drop tomorrow morning, and maybe even Game. Join us back here in the morning and we’ll bring you all the live stock updates as they happen. Ciao for now!

What PS5 restocks could we see today?

08:05 , Alex Lee

Goooooood morning PS5 hunters and happy Friday!

Argos is set to drop stock any minute now, so be prepared. This will be a click and collect drop, so you’ll need to order online and pick up a PS5 from your local store. Our recommendation? Get queueing outside your local Argos right now for the best chance of securing a console.

We’ll be updating you throughout the day. Stay tuned!

The PS5 is now in stock at Argos

08:10 , Alex Lee

PSA: Argos has just dropped the PS5 onto its website. The drop is happening region by region, and it’s only available for collection and not delivery, so you’ll have to pop into your nearest store. Immediate collection is definitely happening though. Keep refreshing if your location hasn’t appeared yet.

Only the disc edition console is in stock this time round. If you’re struggling to pick one up, you could try popping in to your local store but there’s no guarantee that you will secure one.

When could Game PS5 stock drop?

08:32 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

Earlier this week, Game updated its PS5 bundles page with new release dates of 20 December. These release dates are essentially dispatch dates, and Game frequently restocks a week and a half before this date. That means we’re in prime position for a restock today.

We don’t often see Game restock the PS5 on a Friday, so the chances are slim, but we’ll still keep our eyes out for you and let you know. The @PS5StockAlertUK tracker thinks it could be a possibility.

The retailer always adds a post to its @GAMEHelps page and its Facebook page the day of a drop. We’ll post here if we spot one.

Information on how Argos PS5 stock drops work

08:50 , Alex Lee

This is some intel from the @PS5StockAlertUK Twitter account, who shared some interesting information regarding Argos during a previous drop in November.

According to the stock tracker, Argos will display the “Out of stock” notice if the site is receiving too much traffic, so it’s best to keep looking intermittently. Argos isn’t the easiest retailer to secure stock from, sadly.

Where to get the Xbox series X

09:10 , Alex Lee

Managed to cop a PS5 from Argos this morning and want to make it a really, really good day? We can help you find an Xbox series X, if you want one of those as well.

The Xbox series X was in stock at Amazon this morning, and it was probably the final restock at the retailer before Christmas. Sadly it sold out super fast, but fret not.

Our Xbox series X restock liveblog is on hand for the latest info on future drops from other retailers.

Best headset for PS5

09:40 , Alex Lee

Well done to anyone who has managed to secure a PS5 from Argos so far. If you want to level up your game, we’d recommend pairing it with a solid gaming headset. Our pick? It is, of course, the pulse 3D wireless headset from Sony (£89.99, Johnlewis.com).

 (Sony)
(Sony)

“There’s no shortage of gaming headset options out there but the PlayStation 5 pulse 3D wireless headset is a little bit special,” our writer said in their round-up of the best PS5 accessories. “Made with certain PlayStation 5 games in mind, its 3D audio means you can feel fully immersed in the experience, feeling like things are truly happening all around you.”

PS5 price UK

10:00 , Alex Lee

The PS5 disc edition costs £449.99, while the PS5 digital edition is cheaper at £349.99. The standard PS5 is the exact same price as the new Xbox series x – conveniently also out of stock at most retailers. But the Xbox series s (the all-digital edition of the Xbox series x) is cheaper than the PS5 digital edition, costing just £249. If you want more information on the differences, you can read our comparison of the Xbox series x and PS5.

A number of retailers, including Game, Very, ShopTO and more are selling the PS5 bundled with games and other PS5 accessories as well. This inflates the price, but also deters those pesky scalpers.

Still searching? The console may still be in stock at Argos, so keep checking.

Who is most due a restock?

10:30 , Alex Lee

We’ve had so many restocks this week that we’re starting to lose count! The retailers really are pulling out all the stops to help get you a PS5 before Christmas.. .

According to our records, AO and Asda haven’t restocked their PS5 supplies since 9 November, a whole month ago. . Scan is lagging far behind, with no stock since 9 September, John Lewis last had a tiny restock on 3 November, and poor old Tesco has seemingly given up on selling the PS5 with no stock since March.

We’re hoping for one last hurrah from Asda and AO next week, so all is not lost if you’re still struggling along with the Argos drop.

Best PS5 games

11:15 , Alex Lee

Need some games to go with your shiny new console? We’ve rounded up the best PS5 games already for your perusal.

Why is there still a PS5 shortage?

12:00 , Alex Lee

PS5 consoles are notoriously difficult to secure – gold dust for gamers, some would say. And while the stock situation has definitely improved this December, it’s still sells out within minutes.

For one, it was released in the middle of a global pandemic, and the Covid-19 crisis caused much of the manufacturing industry to shut down.

If you want to read more about the pandemic’s effect on supply and distribution, check out our explainer below:

This is why it’s so hard to buy a PS5 right now

Which games console is best?

12:50 , Alex Lee

With so many competitors on the market, from Xbox to Nintendo, it’s hard to know which console to invest in.

Sony’s cutting edge console is certainly a standout that has several advantages over its direct rival, the Xbox Series X – including its DualSense controller with its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

Sony’s PS5 exclusives are also impressive with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the kid-focused Bugsnax both instant hits upon release and upcoming games such as Horizon Forbidden West and the forthcoming God of War Ragnarok sequel eagerly anticipated.

Why is the PS5 digital edition console harder to buy than the disc edition console?

13:45 , Alex Lee

 (iStock/The Independent)
(iStock/The Independent)

As with many restocks this week, the restock at Argos today didn’t include any digital edition consoles, continuing the status quo of the digital edition being harder to buy than the disc edition console.

It’s pretty much been this way ever since the console was first released back in November. When the console first came out, retailers were allocated around 25 per cent digital edition consoles and 75 per cent disc edition console. We don’t know if the situation has changed since then, but we still see fewer digital edition consoles dropping than disc edition consoles.

Retailers themselves might also prefer to order in the disc edition console over digital – they cost more (£449.99) for one, and they can bundle it with physical games to charge a premium.

When’s the next Tesco PS5 restock?

15:25 , Alex Lee

To understand when Tesco will have the PS5 in stock again, one must first ask: when did Tesco last have the PS5 in stock?

You might expect the UK’s biggest retailer would be swimming in PS5 stock, but Tesco has been suffering from a console drought since 15 March. It’s almost like it’s given up trying to get hold of Sony’s next-gen console.

It’s the longest a single retailer has gone without a drop, so we’d keep our Clubcard in our pocket for now.

Need a PS5 SSD?

16:15 , Alex Lee

 (Seagate)
(Seagate)

As of the September update, gamers with oodles of PS5 games can finally install their own SSD onto their PS5 and expand the storage of the console. Before this, only external hard drives could be used, and only PS4 games could be stored on them. It’s a little bit confusing to install, requiring removal of the thumbscrew, buying a heatsink and more, but it’s the price you’ll pay for expanding your storage.

Want an external SSD instead? We’d recommend the Seagate 4TB HDD (£83, Amazon.co.uk). Only PS4 games can be stored on it however. You can read our review of the SSD and our other favourite PS5 accessories below.

More BT PS5 stock set to drop on Monday

16:26 , Alex Lee

So, it turns out BT still has even more PS5 consoles tucked away in storage somewhere. The retailer is set to have yet another restock on Monday.

Once again, only BT Broadband customers are going to be able to purchase the console, but PlayStation Direct might also drop on Monday again too (if you’re not with BT Broadband). We’ll keep you in the loop.
