There's no denying that Spanx makes the ultimate slimming shapewear, but it also makes tons of other clothing that women swear by, like leggings, bras and swimsuits. So when the brand launched new denim jeans, we couldn’t wait to test the line in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab.

To evaluate the jeans, we first had nine testers with varying sizes, body types and ages try them out in real life (spoiler alert: They all loved them!). Then, we put the jeans to the test in the Lab to see how they’ll hold up over time and if they're actually worth the splurge. First, here’s what you need to know about Spanx denim.

What are Spanx jeans?

Spanx jeans look just like regular jeans when you wear them – i.e. they don’t seem like leggings or shaping pants – but the waistband is what sets them apart from normal jeans. The high-rise pull-on design doesn't have any buttons or zippers, which helps eliminate muffin top and looks less bulky than traditional jeans. The jeans also have a built-in shapewear panel in the front to help slim the tummy.

On top of the flattering features, the jeans have seriously trendy styles, from cropped flare jeans to black or white distressed skinny jeans in sizes XS-3X to fit sizes 0 through 28. Spanx also offers the Jean-ish legging, which has a stretchy feel that looks just like jeans (and also comes in a cropped length).

Why we love Spanx jeans

Our testers unanimously said the Spanx jeans were comfortable and flattering, regardless of their size and what style they tried. Testers commented that the fabric was perfectly stretchy, the waistband hit at just the right place, and they got tons of compliments every time they wore the jeans. One even said people kept asking if she lost weight.

On top of how good the jeans looked and felt, they were easy to get on and off and testers loved the trendy styles. Our panel also raved about how well the waistband stayed in place: “Normally, the waistband stretches out when I wear jeans and I worry about them sliding down, but these didn't budge.”

The Spanx jeans also held up in our Lab tests: they didn't shrink and looked great after five cycles through the washer and dryer, and while the dye did rub off a bit in our crocking tests, the transfer wasn't offensive.

Bottom line: Are Spanx jeans worth it?

If you’re willing to splurge, these Spanx jeans were impressive in our Lab tests and several women on our panel liked them better than their favorite designer jeans! Keep in mind that they’re not cheap: The Jean-ish styles are $99, while the denim designs are $128. Two testers thought the jeans seemed too big, so we recommend sizing down if you’re in between sizes. Some also didn't love the fake front pockets and zipper-free design, which can both be disguised with a long top.

All said and done, testers and Lab experts loved them so much after our test that they plan to buy more for themselves. We say these slimming jeans are definitely worth it.
