Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi hopes that star forward Kylian Mbappe will stay at the club beyond summer despite ongoing transfer speculation.

"Of course I want Kylian to stay. For me, he is the best player in the world, and for me Paris is the best club for Kylian," Al-Khelaifi told broadcasters RMC Sport in a interview late Tuesday.

"Kylian is at the centre of the team. He has the best training centre in the world, the best coach, he plays Champions League every year.

"I have a very good relationship with him. Kylian is a great man, a great player, but also a great person."

Al-Khelaifi said that there not too much talks with Mbappe at the moment but spoke of "a gentleman's agreement," without going into details.

Mbappe has been at PSG since 2017 and his contract expires in summer. He did not renew it last year, and said last week he is yet to make up his mind about his future.

The 2018 World Cup winner and 2022 finalist Mbappe has long been linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. However there are also suggestions he may go to an English Premier League top club.

Mbappe is the last remaining member from PSG's star-studded attack, with Lionel Messi having left last year for Inter Miami and Neymar for Saudi Arabia Al-Hilal, and El-Khelaifi declared this era over.

"We don't need stars. The star is Paris Saint-Germain," he said.

The president spoke of "a vision to build a young and strong and French team," preferably led by Mbappe, and with new coach Luis Enrique given time for development even in case of setbacks.

"We are very satisfied with his work," El-Khelaifi said, naming Enrique "the best coach in the world today. He also has a philosophy of taking on young players."
