Watch: Sir Keir Starmer kicked out of Bath pub by landlord

An angry landlord has told Sir Keir Starmer to get out of his pub in Bath.

The Labour Party leader was ordered to leave during a walkabout in the Somerset city on Monday.

Video footage posted on social media showed Rod Humphris, landlord of The Raven pub, shouting at Starmer to leave.

“That man is not allowed in my pub,” shouted Humphris, who appeared to be held back by Starmer’s security team.

“Get out of my pub,” added Humphris. “Go on! Get out of my pub."

In the clip, Starmer, wearing a black face mask, walks out of the door.

After the incident, Humphris, 54, told PA Media why he ejected Starmer from his pub.

“I had heard that the Labour Party were coming round and he turned up and I told him what I thought of him, basically.

“I think he has utterly failed us as the leader of the opposition, he has completely failed to ask the questions that needed asking, like, why did we throw away our previous pandemic preparedness?

“Why have we just accepted lockdown? Why have we just accepted the loss of all our freedoms?”

Humphris, who said he does not agree with coronavirus lockdowns, added: “He walked into my pub without asking and I threw him out.

“Or at least, I did my best to throw him out – his security got in the way.”

The Raven’s co-owner Tim Perry later told Yahoo News UK the angry scenes were partly due to a "misunderstanding" between Starmer’s team and pub staff.

Perry, who owns the pub with Humphris, said: "Labour asked if Keir Starmer could come into the pub, and we said yes, but we didn’t know any of them.

"There was a misunderstanding – my partner had been talking to Sir Keir Starmer in the street and I think they thought he was just a member of the public.

"It then all got a bit heated when [Starmer] came into the pub.

"I was taken aback by how strong [Humphris's] opinions were. He was very angry, and I think he even surprised himself with his own strength of feeling."

Perry would not confirm other reports that Humphris had been restrained by a member of Starmer’s security after "manhandling a female member of staff", saying he "didn’t see it".

Perry had reportedly earlier said Humphris’s views "did not reflect those of the pub", and the pub had tweeted that there was no intention to "hijack" Starmer's visit to the city.

The Labour Party press office said on Twitter that it would “not be amplifying” the footage.

The party said: “A clip circulating online shows Keir Starmer being confronted by someone spreading dangerous misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We will not be amplifying it.

“Keir argued that our NHS staff have been working tirelessly to protect public health and that restrictions – while painful – have been absolutely necessary to save lives.”

For his part, Humphris said he gave Starmer a “piece of my mind”, adding: “I would say this to any politician – it’s not a partisan matter.”

During the heated exchange, Starmer was seen handing Humphris a pen.

The pair also talked outside the pub, when the landlord vented his anger about pubs being closed during the coronavirus pandemic.

Pubs are allowed to serve customers outside after an easing of England's coronavirus lockdown last Monday.
