PANAMA CITY — The local Martin Luther King Jr. Day Festival is back for another year after the cancellation of last year’s event due to the spread of COVID-19.

A-CURE (Advisory Committee for Urban Revitalization Equity) and the city of Lynn Haven are partnering for this year’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Festival, taking place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Sharon Sheffield Park at 901 Ohio Ave.

The family-friendly event will include live entertainment, food booths, arts and crafts and activities for kids. Several performances will take the stage at Sharon Sheffield Park from local music groups like the New Gulf Coast Choir and Konkrete Soul. In addition, visitors can enjoy live music from DJ Ernest Todd all day.

“We started this festival because we wanted to somehow get kids involved and have activities all day to honor Dr. King,” said Myron Hines, chairman of A-CURE. “It continues to grow every year and has a great turnout.”

Bay County officials will have welcome speeches and a short officials program beginning at noon.

For more than three decades, A-CURE has hosted two events, a memorial march and a festival on the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday to honor and celebrate the holiday with the community. This year, however, the memorial march will not take place because there has not been enough A-CURE members and participation in the last few years.

“The last couple years that we’ve had the march, our numbers have been dwindling down and the majority of the organization is getting older, so we didn’t feel like we could get enough people to do the march this year,” Hines said.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the festival. The organizers at ACURE are still looking for entertainers and booths for this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day Festival.
