Public sector jobs have advantages

When choosing a career path, one of the biggest decisions a job seeker can make is whether to pursue employment in the public or private sector. While both options have merits, public sector jobs offer many advantages.

“Working for Wayne County provides a great sense of personal value and quality of work. It’s very meaningful to know you are contributing to the community,” Wayne County Human Resources Director Barb Winey said. “Whether it comes in the form of safety, services, or something else – it’s not just about a company’s bottom line. Equally important is job stability because while companies close and shut down, Wayne County won’t, and we’ve proven that since 1812. When it comes to work and life balance, we put family first and work second, and for most jobs, there is no weekend, second, or third shift work. Add these three things together, and you can’t go wrong working for the county.”

While some of the 900-plus jobs are located inside the Wayne County Administration Building, there are many places throughout the county where county employees work, including the court system, law enforcement, engineer’s office, dog shelter, and care center.

Public service work has always held a certain allure for individuals seeking a sense of purpose. Wayne County jobs also provide stability and security, which can be hard to come by in the private sector. These positions come with the assurance of a steady paycheck, a comprehensive benefits package, and 11 paid holidays. Job stability is particularly appealing when the economy is uncertain and can provide peace of mind for individuals seeking a reliable income.

Exploring diverse career paths in the public sector can open up opportunities for individuals from all walks of life. Contrary to popular belief, government work is not all desk jobs and politics. The government sector offers various positions catering to multiple interests, skill sets, and passions. Some of the job opportunities that are currently open to qualified applicants are:

  • Accountant

  • Building Inspector

  • Security Officer

  • 911 Dispatcher

  • Healthcare

  • Dog Kennel Attendant

  • Court Administrator

Another advantage of a career with the county is its focus on service to the citizens. Working in a county government role allows individuals to contribute directly to the betterment of society by addressing the needs and concerns of local residents. This sense of purpose and the ability to effect change can be incredibly fulfilling, making county jobs particularly appealing for those who value making a difference in their communities.

Wayne County jobs also come with a favorable work-life balance. Many positions offer flexible schedules, allowing employees to maintain a healthy equilibrium between their personal and professional lives. This balance is crucial for overall well-being and can lead to increased job satisfaction. Additionally, they offer an excellent retirement plan.

Marcy Stoller has worked for the county since 2019 and is glad she chose the public sector.

“I was drawn to the idea of not having to work on the weekends, being able to help others, and make a difference,” she said. “I’m thankful that I work for Wayne County. I feel like I’m contributing to positive change. The stability, financial security, and work flexibility give me the peace of mind and freedom to pursue other interests outside of work.”
