Public works crews ask for help clearing storm drains before rain moves in

Public works crews are urging people to clear off storm drains because of the potential for flooding. We found Wayne Douglas in West Bridgewater clearing his drain for the incoming storm

Shawn Anderson is the Assistant Director of West Bridgewater Department of Public Works. “If they don’t clean it the water will go down their driveway and might flood out their basement,” said Anderson. DPWs have been prepping storm drains all week.

“When we get these storms, these flood watches and these wind alerts and all that stuff with the leaves coming down we are down there pretty much every day trying to get these basins opened up,” said Anderson.

DPWs say when you do clear your drain make sure you take the leaves away so they don’t end up in the drain and cause more problems. “We have been doing a lot of cleanups with the leaves and all that,” said Anderson.

Wayne’s drain gets a more thorough cleaning when all the leaves are down. “I actually go out, lift up the grate and clean up all the mud that is in the back of it,” said Wayne, “I just want to make sure water will flow like in front of my home”

DPW officials here also say it’s a good idea to check for leaves during the storm to make sure more leaves don’t pile up in the wind and rain.
