Publix announces opening date for first Louisville location

Louisville's first Publix grocery store has an official opening date.

The supermarket at 2500 Terra Crossing Blvd., near Middletown, is set to open at 7 a.m. on Jan. 10. The nearly 56,000-square-foot grocery store will also feature an adjacent Publix liquor store, the first such shop outside of Florida.

The Florida-based company first announced plans to expand to Kentucky in September 2021, marking the eighth state in which it will operate.

The grocer also plans to open two other Louisville locations: one at the northwest corner of Flat Rock Road and Shelbyville Road (near the Shelby County line) and the other at the northeast corner of Ballardsville Road and Brownsboro Road.

All three of these Louisville Publix locations are on the far eastern stretches of Jefferson County, outside of the Interstate 265 loop.

The company also plans to open two supermarkets in Lexington and another in Boone County in Northern Kentucky.

The out-of-state competitor appears to be heating up competition for consumers' dollars.

Earlier this year, Kroger filed construction plans with the city for a new grocery store across the street from the Publix in development on Ballardsville Road.

With some 250,000 employees, Publix is the largest employee-owned company in the U.S. It has just over 1,300 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
