Publix is building another new store in Pensacola area. Here's what we know

Florida's largest grocery chain is expanding its Pensacola area footprint once again.

Construction has broken ground on a new Publix location off South Blue Angel Parkway.

Here’s what we know about the new location.

In Navarre: New Navarre Publix opened Wednesday in Wynnehaven Plaza

In Milton: Publix adds new Milton location at Merganser Commons on Dogwood Drive

What’s being built?

According to an Escambia County spokesperson, a development at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and South Blue Angel Parkway is planned to be a new Publix location.

The new grocery store will go in at 9262 W. U.S. Highway 98 in the unoccupied northeastern corner of the intersection.

At this time, it is unknown what other tenants might share the property with the new Publix.

What is Publix?

Ranked as one of 10 largest supermarket chains in the country, the inter-state company has built a reputation for great customer service, clean stores stocked with quality goods, and the popular "pub sub" sandwiches made fresh in the deli.

The first Publix was opened in Winter Haven in 1930 by founder George W. Jenkins. In five years’ time, Jenkins was able to open his second store in a location shortly across town.

Nearly a century later Jenkins’ vision has expanded from two stores to more than 1,300 and counting, with 855 located in Florida alone.

Why a Publix?

Although there is a Winn-Dixie located across the street from the future Publix, the absence of choice can be detrimental for local consumers.

The new supermarket will not only provide a fresh choice for residents, it will bring its award-winning policies and company culture.

According to data sourced from Publix’ site, the new location will likely add approximately 180 jobs to the area as well.

Publix has been growing its footprint in northwest Florida steadily in recent years. Two of the most recent openings include a new store that opened on Navarre Parkway in Navarre in March and a store that opened on Dogwood Drive in Milton last November.

How many are in the Pensacola area?

There are currently six other Publix’s across Pensacola. These stores are located at:

  • 8684 Beulah Road

  • 2180 W. Nine Mile Road

  • 9251 University Parkway

  • 5055 N. Ninth Ave

  • 1100 E. Cervantes St.

  • 5998 Mobile Highway

The closest store to the in-progress Publix is their Mobile Highway location, which are separated by more than 6 miles.

When will it be done?

No timetable or estimated completion date was provided for the latest project.

Considering that ground has only just been broken, it is likely to be some time before the newest store is up and running.
