Publix makes Fortune’s list of 100 Best Companies to Work For

For 25 years in a row, Publix has been recognized on Fortune’s list of 100 Best Companies to Work For.

“Our founder, George Jenkins, once said people are the key to Publix’s success,” said Publix CEO Todd Jones in a press release. He explained that if we took care of our associates, they’d take care of our customers."

"We’ve remained true to this belief since our very first store opened in 1930," he added. "Being recognized on this list is a testament to our associates’ dedication and hard work.”

Publix Super Markets Inc, which ranked 92 of the 100 companies on the Fortune list, said it supports its associates with help to reach their full potential in their career and self-development goals. Employees, for example, are provided career development training, coaching and tuition reimbursement benefits, supermarket officials said.

Additionally, as the largest employee-owned company in the country, eligible Publix associates can own stock and purchase additional shares in the company.

Great Place to Work conducted an annual workforce study last year using more than 870,000 employee responses and data from companies representing more than 6.1 million employees.

The employees shared feedback about their organization’s culture by responding to statements in the survey that described "a great employee experience" as defined by levels of trust, respect, credibility, fairness, pride and camaraderie.

Companies were also required to answer essay questions saying how and why the corporation is a great place.

Survey data analysis and essay evaluation results were then factored into a combined score to compare and rank the companies that create the most consistently positive experience for their employees.

In November, Publix also was named one of America’s Best Employers for Veterans by Forbes, ranking No. 38 of 200 total companies and No. 3 of 16 in the retail and wholesale industry.

Treating associates with dignity and respect is a philosophy that guides the company, Publix said. The Lakeland-based grocer encourages associates to share their feedback through an annual survey and an internal site.

Publix has more than 230,000 associates, and currently operates 1,297 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.
