Publix at Promenade Plaza in Palm Beach Gardens to close Saturday

The Publix at Promenade Plaza in Palm Beach Gardens will close its doors this Saturday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.

It's all part of the Lakeland-based grocery chain's plan to tear down the current structure and build a new, larger store. The new store is expected to open in the spring of 2025.

It’s part of a larger pattern of Publix scrapping its aging stores for larger structures with wide aisles with more modern features and updated selections.

Publix handed out green fliers to customers at the Publix at Promenade Plaza, 9900 Alternate A1A, leading up to Saturday's closure. The flier listed nearby Publix locations. The Palm Beach Post provided the distance to those stores from the Publix at Promenade Plaza.

New Publix will follow model of Royal Palm, Wellington stores

Several Publix stores in Palm Beach County have been included in the chain’s overhaul, including at Royal Palm Beach and Okeechobee boulevards and at Wellington Trace and Greenview Shores Boulevard in Wellington.

In some cases, Publix also buys out leases of adjoining tenants to aid in the store’s growth. Those stores are then torn down as Publix absorbs that square footage.

That is the plan at the Promenade Plaza, on Alternate A1A between Burns Road and Northlake Boulevard, where one tenant space on either side of Publix will be torn down, according to Natalie Crowley, Palm Beach Gardens director of planning and zoning.

The Publix in Promenade Plaza, which opened in 1989, is 42,450 square feet. The new store will be 55,454 square feet.

While Gardens Pizza, which was adjacent to Publix, had to close because of the expansion, other tenants in the plaza will be able to stay open during the demolition and construction phases, Crowley said.

The traffic flow through the plaza will be changed, Crowley said. The project also includes changes to parking and landscaping, and there is a public art requirement.

Tenants in the plaza include Planet Fitness, Authentic Smoothies, Team Xtreme Martial Arts, Andy’s Latin Food, Swampgrass Willy’s, Nev’s Barbecue, Crystal Blue Pools, Salons by JC, Garden Wine and Spirits, PBG Nails, Promenade Animal Clinic, Physical Therapy Now, Lighthouse Dry Cleaners, Jewish Family Services, Yumi Sushi, Quest Diagnostics, Ace Hardware, Cutting Edge, Subway, Bealls Outlet, Goodwill, Leffler Eye Care and BodyWorks Pilates.

TRPF Promenade Plaza LLC — a subsidiary of investment firm TIAA’s real estate arm — bought the plaza in April 2017 for $49.25 million, county property records show.

Outparcels include a Mobil gas station, McDonald’s, Mr. Bubbles Car Wash, Wells Fargo and Miller’s Ale House.
