Publix sets opening date for new bigger Beville Road store in Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH ― A year after Publix Super Markets tore down its old store at The Shoppes at Beville Road, the company is finally set to open a bigger store that was built in its place. Here's what we know about the new store.

1. Publix has confirmed an opening date

Daytona Beach City Commissioner Stacy Cantu who lives near The Shoppes at Beville Road recently posted on her Facebook page the new Publix Food & Pharmacy at 1500 Beville Road was opening June 29. When asked how she found out, she said she heard it from a couple of employees.

Publix spokeswoman Hannah Herring on Tuesday confirmed in an email to The News-Journal that the store is opening 7 a.m. on June 29. In a follow-up email on Friday morning, she wrote, "We are excited to reopen our store at the Shoppes."

The new rebuilt store "offers departments for grocery, dairy, frozen food, seafood, meat and fresh produce, as well as a full-service bakery, deli and pharmacy," she added.

"As part of our grand opening festivities, Publix's Good Together truck will be positioned in front of the store before being stocked with non-perishable food items to be donated to a local food pantry that morning."

A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place before the doors open to the public.

2. It's bigger than it looks on paper

The building permit the city issued for the new Publix shows that it is 47,240 square feet in size, compared to the old store that was 40,000 square feet. Herring in her email on Friday stated that the store is 46,811 square feet.

In an interview last year, Sam Jaffe, executive vice president of The Jaffe Corp., which owns The Shoppes at Beville Road, said the new Publix is actually 10,000 square feet bigger in terms of usable space.

The Jaffe Corp. built and opened the 100,000-square-foot neighborhood shopping center on the northwest corner of Beville Road and Clyde Morris Boulevard in 1986, the same year that the old Publix opened.

3. Two tenants moved to make room for the bigger Publix

Two longtime tenants at The Shoppes at Beville Road next door to the old Publix relocated to allow the grocery chain to build a larger store. Beville Salon is now in the end cap space on the shopping center's west end, next to Pizza Hut. Frame & Photo Works left the center and is now a mile to the east at 949 Beville Road, next to John's Appliance & Bedding.

4. The improvements included more than the new store

Vicki Morris, a stylist at Beville Salon, said other improvements to The Shoppes at Beville Road included repaving the parking lot and adding new landscaping as well as a new sidewalk on the center's west end.

As for the new Publix itself, the building permits shows an estimated construction cost of $4.7 million.

"The new store looks gorgeous," said Morris.

5. It draws customers from a wide area

Grocery shoppers at the Beville Road Publix come from as far away as downtown Daytona Beach, said Cantu. "That Publix also caters to students from Embry-Riddle (Aeronautical University, up the street on Clyde Morris)," she said.

Cantu said she and many of her neighbors in the Pelican Bay community on Beville have had to do their grocery shopping this past year several miles to the south at the Port Orange Publix on Taylor Road.

"Oh my gosh, I'm so excited about (Beville Road) Publix reopening," she said. "We've really missed it."
