Pueblo South hall of fame to induct 3 new members, honor past 3 classes this weekend

The Pueblo South High School Alumni Foundation will recognize three years' worth of hall of fame inductees this weekend after the COVID-19 pandemic caused previous ceremonies to be canceled.

A dinner and induction ceremony for the hall of fame classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023 will be held Saturday, April 15 at the Pueblo Country Club Ballroom, 3200 Eighth Ave.

Lester Garrett, John Reinert and retired teacher Dave Robb are the three inductees for the 2023 class.

Previous inductees also being honored include Joe Bassetti, Kerry Balloti Nutter, Scott Bridgman, Jack "Keith" Frazier, Gail Klock, Keith Owen and Laura Schwartzenberger. A social and auction preview will be held at 5 p.m. prior to the 6 p.m. dinner and induction ceremony.

Lester Garrett, Class of 1964

A veteran of the Vietnam War, Lester Garrett served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1972. He received a Purple Heart following a wound sustained while on a PCF-73 swift boat. He also was the recipient of a Navy Achievement Medal. After military service, Garrett began a career in the oil and gas industry. He went on to oversee the construction of more than 400 gas and oil wells across North America.

In 1987, Garrett and his associates started what would become the Denver Firefighters Charitable Foundation and Children’s Burn Camp Golf Tournament — an annual tournament fundraiser for young burn victims. Garrett died in 2019 after a fight with cancer brought on by exposure to Agent Orange.

John Reinert, Class of 1964

John Reinert is an electrical engineer who has worked with Motorola Semiconductor, NCR Microelectronics and United Technologies Mostek. He also has served as director of program management at Aeroflex UTMC and as the first elected president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He currently is the coordinator for IEEE Region 5.

In addition to having five microelectronics design patents, Reinert has committed himself to helping young scientists and engineers. He has served on the Colorado Science Olympiad committee and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs College of Engineering and Applied Science Leadership Council.

Dave Robb, retired teacher

Dave Robb taught English and Journalism classes at Pueblo South High School from 1963 to 1996. He advised the school newspaper, "The Round-up" from 1964 to 1988. Under his leadership, the Round-Up transitioned from a traditional newspaper to a news magazine. To help with desktop publishing and layout design, he introduced journalism students to the cutting-edge Macintosh SE in 1988.

Robb was active in the National Education Association, Colorado Education Association, South High School Alumni Foundation and Retired Teacher's Association. He died in 2019 at the age of 78.
