Puebloans can trash unwanted household items at city-hosted event this month

Pueblo’s “Team up to Clean Up” event that allows people to safely dispose of unwanted items and debris for free will return this month.

The event, held twice a year at no cost, will take place Oct. 14 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., the city announced Wednesday. Puebloans can dispose of their items at two sites: Colorado State University Pueblo at 2001 Rawlings Blvd., or the Colorado State Fairgrounds, 1001 Beulah Ave.

The city hosted the same event in May and last year also brought it back in October.

“These drop-off events are an amazing opportunity for city residents to dispose of household waste, large items and yard debris at no cost,” Andrew Hayes, director of public works for the city, said in a news release. “We have seen the demand for this service grow at each of the events we have held over the past two years.”

Participants in the event are asked to enter the CSU Pueblo site by using Troy Avenue and Rawlings Boulevard near the ThunderBowl Stadium parking lot. At the fairgrounds, entry to the trash site is through Gate 3 on Mesa Avenue and Gate 9 on Beulah Avenue.

What can people bring to the sites?

Any unwanted furniture, mattresses, carpet, yard waste or other larger items can be brought to the sites for disposal. Used tires are also eligible, though there is a limit of five per household and the rims within them need to be taken off. Households are also limited to one pickup-sized truckload.

City staff and volunteers working the event prefer that yard waste be brought in trash bags or boxes.

What is not allowed for disposal?

Staff at the event won’t accept electronics such as televisions, computers or home appliances. They also won’t take “hazardous materials, concrete, soil, rocks or any other type of industrial or commercial waste,” according to the release.

City partners with Black Hills Energy, Waste Connections for outreach and trash disposal

The city for the event partnered with Black Hills Energy, which will distribute home weatherization kits to participants at the fairgrounds.

“As the colder weather approaches, we’re increasing our efforts with our customers and our community partners to share tips on how to manage energy usage this winter,” Patti Olenick, energy efficiency coordinator for Black Hills Energy, said in the release. “With a variety of factors impacting our customers’ household budgets, we want to offer solutions that can help provide savings and keep their homes warm.”

The city also partnered with Waste Connections to offer residents discounted dump fees. The offer will be available only to Pueblo residents at Waste Connections’ South Side Landfill between Oct. 16 and Oct. 31.
