Pueblo's games to watch for the week of 12/19

The winter sports season has started, but many of Pueblo's high school sports programs have begun their winter break this week.

This week's list of games to watch is light but includes a chance for getting back to a winning streak for hockey and some basketball games to close out the Christmas week.

Here are the top high school games and matches to watch for the week of Dec. 19-23:

Ice hockey

Doherty vs. Pueblo County at Pueblo Plaza Ice Arena; 7:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2022

The Hornets Hockey club finally notched its first win of the season last week and this week look to add to that total. The Hornets will face off against a Doherty team currently winless on the season. Look for the Hornets to score on this defense and send the fans home happy for the holidays.

Girls basketball

Colorado Springs Christian vs. Pueblo West at Pueblo West High School, 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022

The only local girls team action this week comes out of Pueblo West as it will host two games this week back-to-back. The first matchup against Evergreen should be one that the Cyclones can handle as they look to get over .500 on the season. The second game of the week is against Colorado Springs Christian and could be an essential early season test for Pueblo West as the Lions are undefeated coming into that game.

Boys basketball

La Junta vs. Pueblo County at Hornet Gym, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2022

The Hornets are also the only boys' team to play locally this week. They have a 4-1 record going into the game and have been on a roll the last few games putting up an average of just under 60 total points a game. Their opponent in La Junta is searching for its first win of the season.
