Pueblo's top high school games to watch for the week of Feb. 6-12

As we head to the final stretch of the season, some winter sports programs in Pueblo are beginning their regional tournaments while others begin their state tournaments.

This week's action has lots of basketball for Pueblo’s best, regional action for wrestling, and state tournament action for swim and dive.

Here are the top high school games and matches to watch for the week of Feb. 6-11:

Boys basketball

  • Pueblo Central at Pueblo County, Monday, Feb. 6, 7:30 p.m.  

  • Pueblo West at Pueblo East, Monday, Feb. 6, 7:30 p.m.  

  • Pueblo Centennial vs. Pueblo South at Events Center, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 7:30 p.m.  

  • Pueblo East vs. Pueblo Central at Events Center, Thursday, Feb. 9, 7:30 p.m.  

  • Pueblo South at Pueblo County, Thursday, Feb. 9, 7:30 p.m.  

  • Pueblo Centennial at Pueblo West, Thursday, Feb. 9, 7:30 p.m.  

Pueblo South has a one-game lead over Central entering this week’s action in the South-Central League standings. Pueblo East is looking to get its first win of the season in league action, but is up against some stiff competition as Pueblo West is battling iwith County for the third seed. Centennial will look to play spoiler against South and West.

Girls basketball

  • Pueblo Centennial vs. Pueblo South at Events Center, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 6 p.m.  

  • Pueblo County at Pueblo Central, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 6 p.m.  

  • Pueblo East at Pueblo West, Tuesday, Feb. 7, 6 p.m.  

  • Pueblo East vs. Pueblo Central at Events Center, Thursday, Feb. 9, 6 p.m.  

  • Pueblo West at Pueblo Centennial, Friday, Feb 10, 6 p.m.  

  • Pueblo County at Pueblo South, Friday, Feb. 10, 6 p.m.  

With Pueblo West having a one-game lead over Pueblo County in the S-CL standings, this week could bring some shake-up in the standings. West will have two tests ahead of them as the East Eagles are starting to find their groove and a scrappy Centennial team stand in their way from an undefeated league season.

Girls swim and dive

  • CHSAA State Finals at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (Thornton) Thursday, Feb 9 through Saturday, Feb 11

The 2023 CHSAA State Finals for girls' swim and dive takes place over the course of three days in Thornton at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center. Pueblo West, County, Central, and Centennial will all have at least one participant competing at the state tournament in their respective events.

Girls wrestling

  • Pueblo Central at CHSAA Girls Region 2 tournament, Coronado High School, Friday, Feb. 10

The Pueblo Central girls’ wrestling team will enter their regional tournament this week and expect to send many girls to the state finals. Keep an eye out for the only ranked wrestler for the girls, Kenna Pino, as she looks to maintain her ranking as the third overall wrestler in the state at 135 pounds.

Boys wrestling

Regional tournaments, Friday, Feb. 10 to Saturday, Feb. 11

  • Pueblo East at CHSAA 4A Region 1, Discovery Canyon High School

  • Pueblo Centennial, South, County, West at CHSAA 4A Region 3, Durango High School 

  • Pueblo Central at CHSAA 3A Region 4, The Classical Academy 

  • Rye at CHSAA 2A Region 4, Rye High School 

The boys wrestling regional tournaments also get underway as many of the Pueblo schools are headed out of town for their regionals. Defending state champions Pueblo East will head to Discovery Canyon, while Class 3A Pueblo Central head to the Classical Academy. The rest of the Pueblo Schools are heading to Durango for their regional tournament. Rye will host a regional for Class 2A Region 4 on Friday.
