Aberdeen food enthusiasts looking for some new flavors need only go to Manna Restaurant.

This new Puerto Rican restaurant opened Tuesday at 23 First Ave. N.E., which is east of Natural Abundance on North Main Street. The site was most recently The Pub, a bar that closed in recent years.

But some folks have noticed big changes inside the building. Maria Galan, with the help from friends and family, converted the former bar into a restaurant featuring authentic Puerto Rican flavors.

"She loves to cook and wanted to open something different for Aberdeen," said Sheila Ferrer, who translated for Galan during a Thursday interview with the American News.

Galan moved to South Dakota 13 years ago in search of a higher-paying job. She moved to Aberdeen about nine years ago when her daughter started attending Northern State University. Her daughter now runs 365 Nutrition on Riverside Drive.

Although Galan moved from her homeland, she never forgot those tastes and wants to share them with the Aberdeen community.

Galan said the menu features items and ingredients that are hard to find locally, which means traveling to larger cities. Galan also has contacts in Puerto Rico who help supply food like the saw fish featured on Wednesday's menu.

Daily specials are available in a buffet style setting, which allows for quick service for customers. Pre-made deserts and fried items are also available. The fried items are in a steamer that keeps them warm. Galan said that's typical of what a visitor would see at markets in Puerto Rico.

A woman of faith, Galan said the name of the restaurant comes from the bread provided to the Israelites after they were exiled from Egypt.

Galan teared up as she talked about the friends and family who came together to help her overcome challenges and make the restaurant a reality.

Manna is open Tuesday through Saturday. The hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

More information can be found on the restaurant's Facebook page.
