Where to get pumpkin whoopie pies and cupcakes: South Shore bakeries serve up fall treats

Fall is upon us, the leaves are changing color, the weather is getting colder and bakeries on the South Shore are crafting pastries, doughnuts and cupcakes fit for the season.

Of course, there are the traditional apple cider doughnuts and pumpkin and apple pies. Yum. But we found a few out-of-the-ordinary fall treats across the South Shore. From pumpkin tiramisu to apple-filled doughnuts, here are some desserts fit for a South Shore autumn day.

(And if you need more fall in your life, check out our Halloween list of things to do on the South Shore or all the autumn activities locally. There is plenty from food trucks to fairs to theater.)

Fall whoopie pies

Weymouth’s Merry Café has been open for the last year and a half. The café is offering fall whoopie pies, including apple and pumpkin. The pies are 4 inches in diameter and are sold for $4 each. The fall menu for the café at 668 Broad St., Weymouth, runs from now until Thanksgiving weekend. (Incidentally, Babycakes in Quincy was owned by the Merry Café owner, Mahriah Harrington. Babycakes closed in early September. A new tenant is working on opening.)

Pumpkin cheesecake

Anne Gabanelle at French Memories Bakery in Cohasset recommends its signature pumpkin cheesecake, which has been made every year since the bakery opened 33 years ago. Everything in the bakery is made from scratch using fresh ingredients, Gabanelle said.

Owned by husband-and-wife duo Jean Jacques and Gabanelle, the bakery recently began to sell more fall-themed pastries such as pumpkin meringue tarts and apple croissants.

French Memories Bakery at 60 S Main St., Cohasset, is open from Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's closed on Sundays.

Pumpkin cupcakes

Cupcake Charlie's is certainly in the fall mood − in fact, every one of its eight flavors this autumn has names that begin with "Pumpkin." They are available during October and November when the store is also offering a Pumpkin Patch Punch Card. If customers try all eight flavors over the next two months, they are entered into a drawing for prizes such as cash and cupcakes.

Apple-filled doughnuts

Dockside Donuts in Marshfield is offering an apple-filled doughnut fit for a fall day. The shop has been open for more than 30 years. The doughnuts are sold for $1.80 apiece.

Dockside Donuts is at 17 Sea St. in Marshfield and is open from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. every day. It also offers breakfast sandwiches, coffee and a selection of other doughnuts.

Pumpkin tiramisu

Laura Raposa, cook, baker and owner of The Foodsmith in Duxbury, recommends one of the bakery's signature fall desserts: the pumpkin tiramisu.

Similar to a traditional tiramisu, pumpkin and other flavors are added to elevate the dessert and to give it a fall vibe. This dessert is baked to order to prevent food waste, she said. Customers can order by visiting The Foodsmith website.

The Foodsmith also offers other pastries such as scones and pumpkin bread that are made fresh every day. Located at 17 Standish St. in Duxbury, the bakery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
