Original story:

A skateboarding halfpipe with a $500 trick contest. Dozens of vendors offering custom-made merchandise. And a roster of punk bands led by Southern California's venerable T.S.O.L.

The inaugural skate-music mashup Punk in the Park outdoor festival takes place from 1 to 9 p.m. June 11 at Eau Gallie Square.

“We tried to be a bit eclectic within the punk genre. Like, for instance, there's a local band called Speed Spirits. They're young guys, but they're kind of more like that 70s-style, Iggy Pop punk," said Steven Spencer, festival co-organizer.

"We have a local band called Casket Culture that is more of the horror punk-type, theatrical stuff. We have skate punk like Skatter Brainz," Spencer said.

“My band is playing — Sixty Foot Giant — and we're punk-influenced stoner rock. Never Ender is pop punk," he said.

“There's a band that has the most metal name on the bill called Porch Coffin, but they are well-written, poppy fun songs. And it's kind of funny, because they look like this metal band, but they're not," he said.

T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty) is a Huntington Beach punk band that debuted back in 1980.

"They're one of the biggest punk rock bands in the world," said Rob Polak, festival co-organizer.

Polak owns 518 Underground and Traditionals Cuts, Shaves & Brews on Eau Gallie Boulevard, and he plays guitar in the hardcore band Coldside.

He said creation of Punk in the Park evolved from plans to throw a one-year anniversary party for 518 Underground, his skate and lifestyle shop that opened on June 4, 2021. Spencer also said Sixty Foot Giant got connected with Fort Pierce Punk Rock Flea Market, and he thought it would be cool to replicate a punk flea market in Melbourne.

Punk in the Park will feature 40 to 45 vendors selling artwork, clothing, jewelry and other custom-made goods, Polak said.

“We figured, why not throw a little flea market-style thing in the park since we have the use of the park? And we have a ton of connections with people who sell their products — all-custom stuff. And we wanted to just bring something different to the area, as far as skateboarding, surfing and punk-rock-style stuff," Polak said.

Eau Gallie High graduate and professional skateboarder Timmy Knuth will skate during Punk in the Park.

Knuth will be joined by 518 Underground team riders Jack Coza, Danny Wagenblast, Corey Cowherd, Dan Cochran and Nick Day. Lake Skateboards will bring its team from Boca Raton, and CIB (Chicks in Bowls) Space Coast also will skate.

Spencer is founder of the music-centric nonprofit Harbor City Local. Proceeds from Punk in the Park will help provide music lessons and instruments for Brevard County at-risk students.

Spencer also co-organizes the Space Coast Music Festival, which featured 96 wide-ranging musical acts in November on seven stages across downtown Eau Gallie.

If the Space Coast Music Festival grows bigger this November, Spencer said it may expand to a two-day event.

T.S.O.L.'s Punk in the Park show will highlight the band's five-day swing through the Sunshine State. The other concerts are scheduled at Will's Pub in Orlando (June 8), Respectable Street in West Palm Beach (June 9), Brass Mug in Tampa (June 10) and Kona Skatepark in Jacksonville (June 12).
