These punters are options for the Buffalo Bills after releasing Matt Araiza

The Buffalo Bills released two punters in the same week. They need to field a punter before the NFL opener against the Los Angeles Rams next week.

Buffalo cut ties with Matt Haack on Monday and gave the job to rookie sixth-round pick Matt Araiza. Then a civil lawsuit was filed against Araiza, alleging that he raped a 17-year-old girl last year while he was a senior at San Diego State. The Bills sat Araiza for their final preseason game Friday amid the public relations firestorm and released him on Saturday.

The Bills can shop the free agent market or bring in a player who is a roster cut casualty. NFL rosters have to be trimmed down to 53 players by 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Buffalo reportedly worked out four punters on Sunday: Michael Palardy, Ty Long, Tyler Newsome and Joseph Charlton.

Here are some of the Bills' options and the status of those players as of Monday morning.

Sam Martin, released by Denver Broncos

Sam Martin wouldn't take a pay cut so he was cut by the Broncos. Martin, 32, wasn't released because of his production over the last two years in Denver. He set a franchise record for net punting average (42.8) last year. Martin has a 46.1 career punting average and 42.6 career net average.

Martin played seven seasons with the Detroit Lions before signing a three-year deal with the Broncos in 2020. He was due $2.25 million in 2022 and reports say his agent told the organization he wasn't interested in taking a pay cut.

Corliss Waitman is the Broncos' new punter.

Update: The Titans are releasing Brett Kern, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The hometown two-time All-Pro could return to western New York. Kern, 36, is a Grand Island native and 2004 Grand Island High School graduate. The 14-year veteran has appeared in three-straight Pro Bowls and has spent the last 13 seasons with the Tennessee Titans.

Kern is eighth all-time with 395 punts inside the 20-yard line and 19th in NFL history with a 45.9 average. He ranks third in Titans' franchise history with 197 games played.

Update: Ryan Stonehouse has secured the Tennessee Titans' punting job.

The undrafted free agent out of Colorado State is pushing Brett Kern for the job. Stonehouse is the NCAA FBS record-holder with a 47.8 career average yards per punt and has put together an impressive camp. Stonehouse is averaging 50.2 yards per punt in the preseason and has booted punts of 68, 64 and 60 yards.

Drue Chrisman, in training camp with Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have a punter competition. Chrisman had a 65-yard punt in the final preseason game and may have taken the lead in the battle as he tries to unset veteran Kevin Huber. The Cincinnati native was the top punting prospect in the country out of high school. He played at Ohio State and was a second-team All-Big Ten member with a 45.0 punt average as a senior in 2021. He was supposed to compete for the job last year but suffered an injury. Chrisman is getting another shot with the Bengals.

Huber has spent all 14 seasons with his hometown team since the Bengals drafted him in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. His high school alma mater is only about 30 minutes from Drue Chrisman's, though he's 12 years older than his training camp foe. Huber holds franchise records for punting average (45.3) and net average (41.8) and has made 980 punts with the Bengals. He's in the top 20 in NFL history in punt average and punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Huber, 37, doesn't plan to retire if Cincinnati parts ways.

“If they move on from me here, I’ll be able to play somewhere else,” Huber said. “I’m still at a point in my career where I can still play at a high level. It’s really not worrying that if you’re done here, you’re done for good. If they move on, they move on.”

Michael Palardy, free agent last with Miami Dolphins in 2021

Palardy, who is left-footed, was on seven NFL practice squads and in the Canadian Football League before spending five years with the Carolina Panthers. His first year in Carolina overlapped with Bills general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott. Palardy suffered a torn ACL in 2020 and signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins in 2021. He was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week in Week 15 and was serviceable with a 45.3 average and 40.6 net average. He has not been in training camp with a team this offseason.

Lachlan Edwards, free agent last with Carolina Panthers in 2021

Edwards would be a familiar face to Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott, although their time together was brief. Edwards signed with the Bills during training camp in 2020 but was waived after eight days. He punted for the New York Jets from 2016-2019. Edwards was the third punter the Carolina used last year and played 10 games for the Panthers with a 47.9 average and 40.5 net average.

Dustin Colquitt, free agent last with Cleveland Browns in 2021

Colquitt, 40, was a full-time punter last season and is a free agent. He's is a two-time Pro Bowl selection and won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. Colquitt, who is left-footed, holds the Chiefs' franchise record for most games played with 238. His 483 punts downed inside the 20 are second-most in NFL history. He played for Kansas City from 2005-2019 before bouncing between Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Atlanta and Cleveland over the last two years. Colquitt has a 44.8 career average and 41.3 net average. Colquitt would join Tampa Bay quarterback Tom Brady and Arizona punter Andy Lee as the only active players in their 40s.

Jordan Berry, free agent released by Minnesota Vikings

The Australian punter has been in the NFL since 2015 but was released by the Vikings on Thursday. Berry spent six season in Minnesota and last year with Minnesota. Berry was beat out by undrafted free agent Ryan Wright this year. He has a career average of 44.7 with a net average of 40.2.

Ty Long, free agent last with Los Angeles Chargers in 2021

Long, 29, played in every game for the Los Angeles chargers over the last three seasons but his punting average went down each year. He had a rough 2021 season, finishing with just a 36.8 net average and stuck just 10 punts inside the 20, which was 31st in the NFL.

Jake Julien, free agent released by New England Patriots

The undrafted free agent was released by the New England Patriots on Aug. 16. Julien, an Ontario, Canada, native, played five seasons at Eastern Michigan and had 51 punts of 50 or more yards. Julien was taken by the Ottawa Redblacks of the CFL in 2021 but chose to stay at Eastern Michigan.

Tommy Heatherly, free agent released by Miami Dolphins

Heatherly signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent out of Florida International University but was waived earlier in the month. He was the Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year last season after setting a school record with a 46.8 punting average.

Sterling Hofrichter, free agent released by Miami Dolphins

The former Syracuse University punter had 56 punts as a rookie for the Atlanta Falcons in 2021 and punted in two games for Tampa Bay last year while Bradley Pinion battled a hip injury. He has a 42.1 career average and 39.4 net average. Hofrichter was in training camp this summer with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins.

Marquette King and Jake Schum, free agents

Both former NFL punters asked the Bills to sign them on Twitter.

"I just wanna get ring," tweeted King, who last played in the NFL in 2018. King was a second-team All-Pro with the Oakland Raiders in 2014, when he led the NFL in punting yards (4,930) and total punts (109). He played five years with the Raiders and one in Denver but was placed on injured reserve after four games in 2018.

Schum grew up near Buffalo, played at the University at Buffalo, lives in Buffalo and is making his case on social media to get a tryout with the Bills.

"Experience over youth. I've been cut multiple times, grew up punting in the snow, I've played in the playoffs (including the NFC championship), played in the XFL and continued to train, waiting for my chance to play at home in Buffalo. It's time. Let's do this. Ready for the call. #nevergiveup #billsmafia," Schum tweeted. He posts training and kicking videos on his Instagram.

Schum played in all 16 games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers in 2015 and 2016, respectively. He had a 42.6 career average.
