Puppy with special needs was surrendered to NC shelter. Now, she gets a second chance

A “playful” puppy with special needs was surrendered to a North Carolina shelter — then came good news.

The Hoke County Animal Shelter said Gracie came into its care after her owner of two weeks couldn’t keep her anymore. After the shelter shared a plea for help, the 3-month-old German shepherd is starting her next chapter at an animal rescue.

“She is sweet and playful and just wants to be loved,” the shelter told McClatchy News in a Jan. 4 email. “We are so happy that she was taken in by such an amazing rescue and will get the second chance she deserves.”

Now, the North Carolina rescue — Mutts2Majesty — said Gracie may have to have her front right leg amputated. The organization said in a Facebook post the dog “has rubbed part of her leg raw by trying to use it.”

Videos show Gracie limping, and the shelter believes she was born with a “paw deformity.”

Gracie is getting a new start at Mutts2Majesty after an “urgent” plea was posted online Jan. 2. The shelter was full, and the pup was in need of a rescue group that could address her special needs, according to a Facebook post on a page called “Assisting the Hoke Co. Animal Shelter in Raeford, NC.”

The shelter said it expects Gracie will go up for adoption after she recovers from having her leg amputated.

Raeford is roughly 90 miles southwest of Raleigh.
