Purdue ALERT test set for Thursday, will include sirens

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – If you hear sirens in West Lafayette Thursday, don't be alarmed, necessarily.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, Purdue University will test its emergency notification system, which will include sirens.

The test will simulate a live situation for practice, Jefferson Howells, Purdue Emergency Preparedness director, said in a release. The U.S. Department of Education requires at least one test each year, while the West Lafayette campus tests the Purdue ALERT system twice – during both fall and spring semesters – according to the announcement.

If there is inclement weather Thursday, the alert test will be postponed until Friday, the release stated. If the weather continues to be an issue, the sirens will be canceled, the release stated, but other alert notifications will be activated Friday.

Campus-wide notifications will come via email, text messaging and Twitter, as well as information on the WL Campus Emergency Status webpage.

Other alerts incluce: the All-Hazards Outdoor Sirens, Alertus beacons in large classrooms, desktop pop-up alerts on most classroom and lab computers, more than 300 digital signs, and Boiler TV emergency alert systems.

According to the release, the alert posted to the WL Campus Emergency Status webpage will state:

“This is the semi-annual TEST of the Purdue emergency warning notification system. This test simulates a level 1 incident. No action is necessary.”

Emergency Preparedness will test the Emergency Warning Notification System for the statewide Polytechnic Institutes later in the day.
