Purdue basketball is ranked No. 1 in the nation, back atop AP Top 25 poll

Purdue basketball is No. 1 in the nation for the second time this season.

The Boilermakers (19-1 overall, 8-1 Big Ten) rose from No. 3 in Monday's Associated Press rankings in the wake of weekend losses by No. 1 Houston and No. 2 Kansas (its second loss of the week). Purdue had 39 first-place votes, and No. 2 Alabama had 23.

The Boilermakers rose to No. 1 for the second time in program history on Dec. 12, 2022, and went 5-1 with that ranking. They lost to Rutgers 65-64 on Jan. 2 and fell from No. 1 the following week. However, they remained in the nation's top 5.

Purdue has won six games in a row, through three of them have been one-possession games, including Sunday's 58-55 win over Maryland. The Boilermakers play at Michigan on Thursday. The Wolverines throttled Purdue in Ann Arbor last February.

Purdue was voted No. 1 for the first time in program history in December 2021.

Indiana (13-6, 4-4), which has won three straight games, is second on the "also receiving votes" list. Those teams are scheduled to meet in Bloomington on Feb. 4.
