WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University Global will be holding its first West Lafayette-based commencement ceremonies Dec. 4 for over 1,700 graduates, including 38 employees across multiple Purdue campuses.

Purdue Global is an accredited online university that is part of the Purdue University system. Over 100 programs are offered through Purdue Global, which only started back in 2018.

"Monthly, we have over 35,000 students who are online," Frank Dooley, chancellor for Purdue Global said. "They are working adults for the most part."

One Purdue Global student who is graduating on Saturday is Brock Turner, the recently hired health and human science educator for Purdue Extension in Tippecanoe County.

"How the programs (through Purdue Global) were set up allowed me to fall in love with learning," Turner said. "I probably look at myself now as a life-long learner, and Purdue Global definitely helped me with that and gave me opportunities to complete those programs that worked with me being a full-time employee, husband and father to two kids."

It is common for hundreds of full-time Purdue employees to be earning their degrees while managing all the other aspects of their adult lives. Attending Purdue Global's online courses allows for that multi-focus.

"To date, we have graduated about 400 (Purdue staff members)," Dooley said. "We have about 400 more enrolled right now."

At Saturday's commencement ceremony, a total of 1,700 graduates – 814 of them will attend in-person and 901 will be in attendance online.

Graduates of Purdue Global reside in 49 states, including 305 Indiana residents, according to Thomas Schott, with Purdue marketing and communications.

Graduates also include residents from the U.S Virgin Islands, Canada, China and Hong Kong, Jamaica, Japan, Kuwait, Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Turks and Caiscos Islands.

"With 'computerization,' more and more jobs require more and more education," Dooley said, "and I think Purdue Global is an example of an institution that's designed to help those folks get the education they need to be relevant in the world we live in."

Purdue University Global will be holding its commencement ceremonies on Purdue's West Lafayette campus Saturday at Elliott Hall of Music, 712 3rd St.

At 10 a.m., the ceremony will host the in-person graduates from the Concord Law School, nursing, social and behavioral sciences and general education studies.

Starting at 2 p.m., in-person graduates for the business and information technology graduates as well as those in the health sciences will be recognized. At 6 p.m., virtual graduates from all the schools' commencement will take place.

All times are Eastern.
