Purdue, Indiana golfers battle for Hoosier Am title

It came down to a battle between rivals from Purdue and Indiana and the Boilermakers' Nels Surtani came out on top after five extra holes to claim the Hoosier Amateur golf tournament at IU's Pfau Course on Wednesday.

IU freshman Cal Hoskins from Warsaw stormed to a 71 in the final round to catch Surtani, who finished with a 73. Both carded 215s. Each had pars on the first four playoff holes before Surtani prevailed.

Miami (Ohio) golfer Brett Podobinski and Evan Woosley-Reed, a three-time Tennessee state champ who will play for the Volunteers this fall, were next at 217.

Two other Hoosiers made the top 15 as Mitch Davis tied for seventh (74-72-74—220) and Eric Berggren tied for 13th at 74-73-76—223, while Southern Indiana sophomore Jason Bannister, the 2022 City Golf Champ, tied 17th at 70-81-74—225.

Bloomington South junior Happy Gilmore tied for 39th (77-79-76—232), while Bloomington North grad/USI junior Jace Day matched his 41st finish from last year with a 78-75-80—233. IU's Robbie Bender was 61st (80-84-79—243, while Bloomington's Mitch Oard (82-84-81) and South grad/Ball State sophomore Drew Todd (83-79-85) tied for 71st at 247. South's Jacob Paine was 78th (88-80-85—253 and Bloomington's Robert Wise tied for 80th (91-85-90—266.

On the women's side, Siarra Stout of Franklin, Tenn. (Lipscomb) had rounds of 75-74-74 for 223 to win by a shot over Purdue's Jocelyn Bruch.

IU's Hanna Tanaka placed 19th shooting 85-89-81—255.

Weiler gets 1st pro win

Bloomington South and Purdue grad Joe Weiler picked up his first win as a professional golfer this week, shooting a 10-under 61 to take the one-round Okoboji Open at Brooks Golf Club in Okobji, Iowa.

Weiler is a member of the Dakotas Tour and this was his 11th event of the season. He has finished no worse than a tie for fifth in each tournament and is the current points leader on the tour. He has tied for second three times, including his debut in Sioux Falls, SD, where he was two shots off the top after finishing with a three-round total of 206.

Weiler has put together rounds of 61, 62, 63 and 65.

The tours runs through the end of August.
