Purdue Trustees hear end-of-school-year report

FORT WAYNE, Ind. − Mitch Daniels' 2021-22 end-of-the-school-year report, the naming of an academic success center and renovations were discussed at Friday's Purdue Board of Trustees meeting.

The meeting, held in Fort Wayne, discussed various previous and upcoming events, achievements and projects at Purdue University.

In reflecting on the most recent academic year, President Daniels highlighted multiple broken records that occurred. The following achievements happened between August 2021 and May 2022:

  • External research expenditures across the Purdue system reached a new university high.

  • Applications for enrollment in the upcoming fall semester for international, nonresident and resident undergraduate students also reached an all-time high.

  • Summer enrollment rates outgrew the other schools in the Big Ten for the second year in a row. This totals 22,000 graduate, professional and undergraduate students across all Summer Session programs.

The trustees approved the naming of the Helen Bass Williams Academic Success Center. According to a recent Purdue release, 50 years ago Williams became the first African American professor at Purdue. She played an important role in establishing the Learning Center, later renamed the Academic Success Center, and as of Friday, bearing Williams' name.

Additional instructional lab capacity was approved to be constructed, in response to the continuously growing number of students at Purdue University.

The appointment of a new trustee as well as the reappointment of two current trustees was announced Friday. Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced Shawn A. Taylor has been appointed to serve a three-year term. He will be replacing Don Thompson, who has stepped down after 13 years on the board.

Lawrence Beck and Malcolm DeKryger were reappointed to serve three-year terms as well.
