Purdue upset by Fairleigh Dickinson in second ever 1-16 upset in March Madness history

The 1-seed Purdue Boilermakers had a size advantage against 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday in Columbus, Ohio.

But it didn't matter.

The Knights had a halftime lead, then kept Purdue at arm's length for the final minutes of the second-ever upset by a 16-seed over a 1-seed in NCAA Tournament history.

Final score: Fairleigh Dickinson 63, Purdue 58.

Purdue center Zach Edey, the frontrunner for this season's national player of the year awards, had 21 points and 15 rebounds against a Knights team that had no one listed above 6-foot-7 on the roster. But FDU had three scorers in double figures, including 19 points from Sean Moore.

Moore had nine straight points for FDU down the stretch, while Purdue struggled to get (and make) clean looks on the offensive end of the floor.

"It's survive and advance, man," Moore said to TNT after the game.

The Knights now go on to face the winner of Memphis and Florida Atlantic on Sunday. The Tigers and the Owls will begin later Friday.

FDU's upset rivals only UMBC's upset of Virginia in 2018 as a 1-16 upset.
