Purdue women's basketball rolls past Syracuse behind Lasha Petree's 31 points
WEST LAFAYETTE - How the Purdue women's basketball team knocked off Syracuse 87-78 on Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Mackey Arena:
▶ Lasha Petree scored a season-high 31 points and added seven rebounds. Petree was 13 of 21 from the field and became the 40th player in program history to score 31 points in a game. The Rutgers transfers also committed eight turnovers as the Boilermakers totaled 21.
▶ Guard Jayla Smith chipped in 12 points, hitting 6 of 9 shots off the bench in 18 minutes of action.
▶ The Orange cut the lead to 31-20 but Petree scored nine of Purdue's next 34 points.
▶ Purdue led by as many as 20 in the second period.
▶ Purdue outrebounded the Orange 44-38, led by eight from Caitlyn Harper.
▶ The Boilermakers scored 54 points in the paint compared to 28 for Syracuse.
▶ Wednesday was Purdue's second straight win in the challenge.
▶ Second-year coach Katie Gearlds' team led 47-29 at halftime.
▶ Purdue's defense limited Syracuse to 36.4% shooting
▶ The Boilermakers shot 50% or better from the field for the fifth time. That total is already sixth most by a Purdue team in the last 14 years.
