New puzzles, e-edition, Saturday delivery: What to know about upcoming Tribune changes

There are several changes coming to the South Bend Tribune's print edition, from Saturday delivery to new puzzles.

As we announced earlier, we will no longer deliver the newspaper to homes or stores on Saturdays. The change goes into effect this week.

We know The Tribune is a vital part of our community's fabric, and we know people love holding the print edition in their hands, but we're continually adjusting to the realities of a digital world.

Our commitment to local news has not changed, nor have our coverage priorities. We are still striving to be your best source for local news. And the good news is you can still find all of our work on Saturdays (and other days) through our electronic edition, a digital replica of the print newspaper. That e-edition comes with several extras and bonuses, too.

Your print subscription also grants you unlimited access to all of our work on southbendtribune.com.

We've made some other changes to the newspaper: we will stop running TV listings and we are introducing several new puzzles and games.

Here's a rundown of all the changes:

Accessing the Tribune e-edition

The e-edition, an electronic replica of the daily newspaper, is free for all print and digital-only subscribers. You can access it on Saturdays since there will no longer be home delivery, but it's also available every other day of the week. You can read it on a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or phone.

The e-edition looks exactly like the print edition; it's easy to scroll through and you can click and enlarge individual articles. You can save and download articles or entire pages. You can also print out puzzles or features you're interested in. And you can listen to articles read aloud.

To activate your account, go to southbendtribune.com/eedition. Or you can go to www.southbendtribune.com and click on the "E-Edition" tab on the navigation bar at the top of the page.

If you don't already have an account, click on the "create account" box and follow the instructions, which will ask for your subscription details, such as your address.

From there you have one more step: you have to "activate" the new account, and you're good to go.

E-edition benefits and extras

There are several benefits to activating your Tribune e-edition account:

  • The electronic edition of USA TODAY is available every day as a bonus.

  • You can access the e-editions of more than 200 USA TODAY Network publications from across the country, including the Indianapolis Star and Detroit Free Press. When in you're in the Tribune e-edition, just click on the "Universal" icon on the right rail and choose a publication to read.

  • You can find two extra sections exclusively in the e-edition — Nation & World Extra, featuring more news from around the world, and Sports Extra, featuring late sports scores. The sections will be inserted into the e-edition pages but can also be found in the "Bonus" section.

  • You can share your subscription with a friend or family member. Go to account.southbendtribune.com and make sure you are logged in (in the top right corner, you should see a button labeled "Hi" and your name. If not, click the “Sign In” button). Select your name and go to “Manage Account." In the left-hand menu, look for “Share digital subscription." Click on that and enter the name and e-mail address of the person to share access. An e-mail will be sent to their inbox with instructions to set up their own login.

Changes to puzzles, TV listings

Starting Saturday, we will no longer run TV listings. We have shortened those over the years and were running bare-bone listings. With show listings so easily available through remote controls now, no matter who your cable or satellite provider is, we felt it was time to use that space for other purposes.

We will instead run recaps, reviews and suggestions for top TV shows and movies. Each day, they will give you an idea of what you can check out and make a priority to view.

We're also changing our puzzle lineup — actually, we're adding to it.

Monday to Saturday: We will no longer run Samurai Sudoku or Sudoku X. But we are introducing four new puzzles to run all six days. Look for ScrabbleGrams, KenKen, Find the Words and Boggle Brainbusters each day. We will still run the regular Sudoku every day.

Sunday: In the comics section, beginning a week from Sunday, we will now run the L.A. Times crossword puzzle instead of the Newsday crossword. Also, we will no longer run Quote Acrostic but will instead run the USA Today crossword in its pace. So that's two crosswords now in the section.

Other additions to Sunday: 7 Little Words, ScrabbleGrams, KenKen, Find the Words, Kubok 16, and the Carolyn Hax advice column.

Bottom line: while we are losing a couple of features — extra Sudokus and Quote Acrostic — we are adding several new ones and offering you plenty more to keep you busy!

And, finally, one change to our comics lineup on Sundays: we will no longer run "Pickles"; this was not our choice — the strip is no longer being syndicated. Instead, we will now run "Curtis," and we think you'll enjoy its humor and insight.

We know these are several changes occurring at once. But in the end, we think it'll make The Tribune more enjoyable for all of our readers, and we hope you take the time to check out the e-edition and all its benefits. Thank you for your patience and for subscribing. We appreciate your support.
