Pvt. James B. McCartney set for burial at Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The remains of an American soldier who was killed in World War II will be buried in a Bakersfield cemetery next Saturday.

Army Private James B. McCartney was killed in action on March 1, 1945, while his unit was on patrol in Wildenguth, France. Private McCartney was assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 222nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division. He was just 22 years old when he died on duty.

The Colorado native was declared non-recoverable in 1951, after investigators searching for fallen American personnel failed to recover any leads regarding his remains.

Years later, officials say historians found remains buried in France that could be associated with McCartney. Those remains were disinterred for DNA analysis in August 2022.

McCartney was accounted for a year later, after his remains were identified. He’ll be interred March 30 at the Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, with graveside services preceding the interment.
