Pyongyang, Seoul conduct dueling missile tests
South Korea on Wednesday released footage showing what it says is a successful test of a submarine-launched ballistic missile.
Seoul's missile test was the same day that North Korea fired a pair of its own ballistic missiles in breach of U.N. sanctions, the latest in another uptick of hostility on the peninsula...
And it comes as diplomatic efforts by world powers continue to fail.
Just days earlier, Pyongyang tested a cruise missile with possible nuclear capabilities.
North Korea has been steadily developing more sophisticated weapon systems. Representatives of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea have recently met over how to break the standoff in talks with Pyongyang, aimed at dismantling its nuclear and ballistic missile arsenals.
The negotiations, initiated between former U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2018, have stalled since 2019.
The office of South Korean President Moon Jae-in said he attended an underwater ejection test of the missile aboard the new 3,000 ton class Dosan Ahn Chang-ho submarine.
South Korea has been seeking to develop increasingly powerful missiles, intended to target heavily fortified bunkers and tunnels in North Korea, while weaning South Korea off a military reliance on the United States.
