Local Doggy Day Care Sees 'Dramatic' Drop In Demand: Q&A

SAN RAMON, CA — When the pandemic hit, San Ramon and Danville clients of Club K9 stopped going on vacations and started working from home. That left Club K9, a woman-owned business in San Ramon, in a tough spot.

Patch is trying to support local businesses by giving them a platform to share their successes and tribulations during the coronavirus pandemic. The following comes from Lori Fabianac, owner of Club K9 (Editor's note: These responses may have been lightly edited and condensed for clarity):

What do you do and how long have you been in business?

Club K9’s 20 acre K9 resort specializes in all-day-play dog boarding and dog daycare services. Club K9 creates doggy vacations design around the way your dog plays! We have many play areas where supervised play groups are tailor-made to meet the specific needs of every dog according to its temperament, personality, social ability and place style. And dogs spending the night can escape to their own private indoor quarters for eating and sleeping.

Club K9 is a family-owned business established in 2003.

What challenges have you encountered during the pandemic?

The challenges we have faced include a dramatic drop in business for both our dog daycare and overnight dog boarding services. Many of our daycare Clients are now working from home, and as a result, no longer need our services. Additionally, our clients are not traveling for pleasure due to restrictions of COVID-19.

Throughout this pandemic, Club K9 has maintained its staffing levels. Our employees are like family to us and the majority of our staff has been part of our team for over a decade.

How have you adapted and continued to serve people during this time?

Club K9 has always had a car valet service. It works well with social distancing and limiting contact with our clients. Additional health and safety measures include: Contactless payment, mask and gloves are worn by all staff members, hand sanitation between customers, social distancing and temperature check.

What aspect of your work are you most looking forward to returning to when restrictions are lifted?

We miss our clients, over the years we have developed wonderful relationships. And more importantly, we miss our four-legged companions. They have become part of the Club K9 family.

Is there anything else you'd like to tell readers or customers?

Club K9 realizes that dog owners view their dogs as family members, not just family pets. Our goal is for the family dog to have as much fun as the owner while away from home. Hence our motto, “While you’re away your dog's at play!”

Most importantly, to ensure your dog feels comfortable in our social dog daycare and dog boarding program, we offer a free day of play. Your dog will be introduced to our team of dog lovers and interact with playmates. As a result, when your dog is familiar with Club K9, future visits will be seamless.

How can people get in touch with you and where are you located?

Club K9 is located just west of San Ramon at 10671 Crow Canyon Road. Only 2.7 miles from Crow Canyon exit, off Interstate 680, near City Center Bishop Ranch.
