QB Max Johnson injury update ahead of Alabama football vs. Texas A&M

Alabama football might not have to face Texas A&M starting quarterback Max Johnson because of an injury.

Multiple outlets reported Thursday that Johnson has a broken bone in his throwing hand and that he is not expected to play against the Crimson Tide.

However, a source close to Johnson told The Tuscaloosa News that no one has told Johnson anything about playing time.

No. 1 Alabama (5-0, 2-0 SEC) will face Texas A&M (3-2, 1-1) on Saturday (7 p.m., CBS) at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Johnson suffered the injury in Saturday's loss to Mississippi State. Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said his starting quarterback would be day-to-day.

If Johnson can't go, he will be replaced by either Haynes King or Conner Weigman, a five-star freshman. King replaced Johnson in the loss to the Aggies but threw two interceptions in his 13 passing attempts.

King was the starter to begin the season, but he was benched after the Aggies' loss to Appalachian State. This season, King has completed 39 of 64 attempts for 510 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.

Johnson, by comparison, has gone 43-for-71 for 517 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

"We've seen a little bit of both guys,” Nick Saban said Monday. “We don't really know the circumstances of the situation but we have to prepare for both guys. I mean, we do this a lot, especially when the skill set of the two guys is a little bit different. We have no way of knowing if (King) plays, if they're going to do something different with him.”
