This summer may have been the last season ever for a Summit County swimming hole.

The Quarry in Peninsula had its last day on Aug. 20 for the summer season.

And it noted in a Facebook post that after 68 years in operation as a place to cool off in a closed rock quarry, this summer was likely its last.

"Thank you to everyone who joined us last weekend for our final day," a Facebook post earlier this month noted. "It was a beauty, though a lot of tears were shed at closing."

Situated along state Route 303 just outside of the heart of Peninsula, the quarry is part of a 85-acre parcel that is up for sale.

It is owned by Carol Haramis, and her husband, George, who operate the Christmas Tree Farm at Heritage Farms off Riverview Road.

The farm, which also offers vacation rentals, camping sites and a wedding venue and hosts special events, is marking its 175th year and has been owned by the same family since its founding.

The history of the property: Peninsula’s Heritage Farms selling 85 acres, but it won’t affect Christmas tree operations

The couple plans to keep the 10-acre farm but is looking to sell the large swath of undeveloped land around it that includes a few ravines, a few ridgetops, two creeks, a pond and the sandstone swimming quarry.

Listed at $3.175 million − down from its initial price of $3.485 million in the spring − by the Pickard Commercial Group, the property is zoned for residential-agriculture.

It is situated outside of the boundaries of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park so there are no scenic easement restrictions on the property.
