Quarterback Brunkhorst, coaches confident Genoa's Teet will come down with every catch

GENOA — Austin Teet makes for good odds.

He has an exceptional catch radius, which his coach will explain. Teet can bend a little without slowing down much in order to find open space after a reception is plucked.

“If I throw it away, [assistant] coach [Mike] Vicars says give Teet a chance,” Comets quarterback Aiden Brunkhorst said. “For a 50/50 ball, Coach Vicars says it’s 90/10 for him.”

The Genoa junior caught a 9-yard touchdown pass Friday from Brunkhorst in a 28-25 victory over Oak Harbor.

“The way he can catch the ball with his hands at any level — high, to the side — his athletic ability is up there with anybody,” Comets coach Bill Fisher said. “He’s a dude. He has the ability to be a special player.”

Teet, the fastest player on the team, played on Saturdays last season.

“This year, he stepped up his athletic maturity,” Fisher said. “He sees the big picture. The light bulb went off. He knows we expect big things.”

Teet plays defense at corner.

“He doesn’t start right now,” Brunkhorst said. “He feels he’s better than everyone he goes up against. He tells me, ‘I know I’m covered, but I’ll make a play.

“'Give me a chance.' That’s his mindset.”

He's got swag. Of course, Teet’s brazenness is bolstered by offensive coordinator Vicars.

“He’d been talking all offseason,” Burkhorst said of Teet. “’This is my year. I’m coming for you.’ I knew it was coming. His focus, his mindset and his confidence.

“Our coaches trust him.”

Teet gained a first down with a reception, a few plays before Robert Messenger scored the go-ahead touchdown for a 21-18 margin in the fourth quarter.

Teet added a 14-yard reception to start the drive before his touchdown. He caught an 11-yard pass to set up Aidan Antry’s 15-yard scoring run for a 14-6 advantage.

“He became a different monster,” Brunkhorst said. “He’s violent. We have so much trust in him to go get a 50/50 ball. He’s stepped out. Strength and speed.

“The out route he caught over the corner on third-and-long was a big play. His energy and the way he talks to guys, he puts confidence in you. I have confidence in him.”

90:10 is a safe bet.
