Queen Charlotte spoilers follow.

Bridgerton fans may have been impatiently counting down the days until season three, but the regency romp's new spin-off show, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, presents us with a royal love story that is sure to have satisfied all their needs. (For now, anyway).

Centred on Queen Charlotte's rise to power, this Bridgerverse prequel tells the story of how the young royal's marriage to the freshly-minted King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton as we've come to know and love it.

As the last scenes of the royal couple "hiding from the heavens" under their bed fade away, we have to ask: is there any more to come? Could we handle it if there is? And what would it entail?

Here's what we know about a possible second season.

So far there's been no official renewal from Netflix. Given that Queen Charlotte has been billed as a limited series – six and done – it would seem, dear reader, that that's very much that: the story's told.

"There have been questions [about a second season], but I'm not having conversations about it yet. I could live with Charlotte and George forever, but we told a very specific, closed-ended story that I think is a complete tale of this complicated, imperfect love," series creator Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly.

It's a tough pill to swallow, we know – but all hope is not lost. Rhimes did add that she's not "ruling anything out" because she "never knows" how she may feel about continuing the story in the future.

After all, Queen Charlotte and King George III were married for over 57 years and had 15 children together, meaning there's definitely more to explore should Rhimes choose to further expand on their epic love story.

It wouldn't be the first time a hit 'limited series' has decided to move forward with a second season, either...

If (and it's a big if, sadly) Queen Charlotte returns for a second season, we would certainly expect India Amarteifio and Corey Mylchreest to reprise their roles as young Queen Charlotte and King George, respectively. (You can't have Queen Charlotte without Queen Charlotte, after all.)

Brimsley (Sam Clemmett) and Reynolds' (Freddie Dennis) love story is another we simply must see more of – especially given Reynolds was nowhere to be seen in the present-day timeline. Our Rensley hearts need answers!

Meanwhile, Arsema Thomas is more than up for returning as young Lady Danbury, telling EW: "It would be amazing to inhabit that space again. But also where we've left her off now, she's a good space. If that's the last time I get to be her, she's empowered and she's ready to walk on her own two feet. But if I do get a call for doing it again, I will take it."

Then, of course, there are the characters' older counterparts, including Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte, Adjoa Andoh as Lady Agatha Danbury, Ruth Gemmell as Dowager Countess Violet Bridgerton, and Hugh Sachs as Brimsley.

Although Rhimes has said that Queen Charlotte is a "complete tale" of Charlotte and George's "complicated, imperfect love", there are still plenty of other threads that could be explored given the couple's marriage and reign spans more than 50 years.

Future seasons could continue to explore Charlotte and George's marriage and, while we know that George's illness will worsen, we'd happily watch Charlotte as she continues to support her husband and remain at his side while he rules.

It would also be interesting to see how Charlotte continued to move the Great Experiment forward (and how her debutante ball came to be), giving us further insight into the history of the Ton.

Meanwhile, another season could follow Agatha Danbury as she embraces single life after declining Adolphus' marriage proposal, as well as young Violet Ledger's debut and courtship with Edmund Bridgerton.

We could also watch as Brimsley and Reynolds continue their secret romance behind palace doors, and hopefully learn why Reynolds was nowhere to be seen in the later timeline.

One thing’s certain, if a follow up does happen, it won’t be part of a multi-season plan. That’s not how Rhimes works (via Vulture).

"I have not written an outline in 18 years because every time I did, I would stray from it so much. I discover a lot in the writing. I want to see where these characters go, and I’m not going to force them into some plot point."

And all those conspiracy theorists who might be expecting to see more Meghan Markle parallels in season two, brace yourself for disappointment.

"Meghan Markle did not enter into it," Rhymes said. "My brain mostly thinks in terms of American politics, unfortunately, so I was really thinking about what would happen if this girl, Charlotte, came to America and was married off and how that was handled."
